Not sure if I have seen anything about this, but show us some of the cool old ads that were painted on the side of buildings. IMG_20180510_194747226.jpeg

The sign painters from years ago were true craftsmen and very talented and good at what they could do on a vertical substrate.

I remember seeing a lot of painted signs on buildings as a kid when we traveled all over on vacations. There used to be little bird housed every where that said "SEE ROCK CITY" I bugged my Dad for years to take us to Rock City. He said it was just a tourist trap. My wife and I finally went down that way a few years ago, Dad was right!!

This one was uncovered after a fire destroyed the adjacent building. 20181004_111026.jpg

I have always wondered how they were able to get the the size and perspective on such a large area outside?
Any old sign painters know the trick to doing it the correct way?

Another interesting technique is watching a signpanter do splash art on store front windows of restaurants and other business.

They sketch the entire thing out using a grease pencil on the outside of the glass first and then going inside of the business to fill in all the colors and lettering and once it is complete they simply take some mineral spirits and wash the grease pencil lines off the outside of the glass.

Since splash art is done using water base colors so many business owners prefer to have the artwork on the insides of the windows so it lasts longer then being exposed to the elements.
