Overdrive

Well here I am with a problem with the overdrive on my 49 Mercury. I want to by-pass the od relay and governer. I have replaced the solinoid and it test ok when connected to the battery, can I take a hot wire off the switch straight to the solinoid with a toggle switch in between. and not need a relay ? Will this work ? I have not tested the od governor but want to by pass and have a direct say when to up or down shift with the od. If some one has done this before please advise on the correct procedure. Thanks, Jack in Texas
