Guys in So-Cal don't count? Im not understanding this. I just threw away a ton of auto mags and still have a ton more laying around. Should I just throw them out?

So far, no one has stepped up to the plate to be the drop off point. Here's your opportunity!

Would sending some motorcycle mags be out of the question? I know I've got a good stack of them as well that I'm sure someone would enjoy.

  6. So, are we saying that items on the list are not necessarily needed, appreciated, or used?
I'm going shopping and want to get items that will be used.

Please adhere to the list provided by the USO/VFW/American Legion. Everyone we heard from that we shipped to last year was more than happy with what was sent. Grave Robber 6 and Slepe67 both said they heard nothing but good things about all of it.

    -Ray Gun out.

Ray Gun, sorry to add to the confusion. I just want to point out that this is Ray Gun's deal. Do NOT listen to me, I just threw out some advice...He's putting the work into it, and last year it was KILLER!

For one time since 2002, it was the 2nd Xmas I had NOT been over there, and I honestly wished I WAS there, because I peeked into one of the packages, and about crapped myself!!! It was KILLER! Everyone that I talked to about the packages had nothing but praises about them...

    Press on!

Don’t be confused. Send what you honestly think will make someone happy. Try to send fun stuff and useful stuff such as toiletries, toys and snacks! Magazines are good too.

While it is true that the generic list all the organizations put out do not necessarily reflect the current operational environment needs for every person at every FOB, COB, or COP, and that was what I originally tried to convey, however, I obisouly didn’t do it eloquently enough for it to be well received. After I seen the response, I modified the post to just say not to send a comb.... since well, that’s just silly. That was the very day after I posted it.

I didn’t mean for it to be confusing. I’m sorry it was taken the wrong way.... hence the change.

Get creative, or stick to the list, it all good. Ive seen a stuffed purple easter bunny rabbit as large as a person sent, which was awesome BTW since it was then sent to his daughter.

Send whatever your heart desires as long as it’s not porn, liquor, or drugs as the recipient would get in trouble for that.

Just posted the Drop Off Deadline. It's 30 NOV. 09

Also, those wanting to donate money for shipping (IN ILLINOIS) can

make a CHECK payable to THB187ALA

    Mail it to:

    The American Legion
    Packages Abroad Project
    C/o Pam Bertolani
    310 W. Butterfield Rd.
    Elmhurst, IL 60126

Or check with your local drop off point and ask them for the information on where to donate in your area.

Also, we're getting TONS of old magazines. That's great. But we're about at capacity on those. If everyone wouldn't mind, we could use some of the supplies that are listed. We've not received any so far. Hopefully we can fill the boxes with other items as well, and get them the much need toiletries also.

    Thanks again everyone!!

Not as of yet. The ones I posted were all the people that volunteered. If no one volunteers, you can still contact your local VFW/American Legion/USO and drop the items off there.

We're still looking for items from the list folks. Lots of magazines and some t-shirts are here. Would sure like to see some of the toiletries and maybe some snack stuff arrive. ;)

If one isn't listed, then no. We've not had anyone volunteer for that area that I know of. Pm me his address over there and we'll be sure he gets a package!

I'm at the NCO Academny in Panama City, FL. I'm going to try to organize something this end. If you are in this area, say, between Panama City, and Pensacola/Mobile, get ahold of me.

The guys I work with are still talking about last years stuff, and a few of them are going to back over there this year...

Jesse, are we going to do an airlift on one of our (AFSOC) birds again like last year?

I'm a staff geek these days, but do get to fly once in a while. Here's what the Air Force Times wrote this week about cut-off dates:

HOLIDAY MAIL DEADLINES TO CONTINGENCY LOCATIONS
    Parcel Post: 13 Nov
    Space Available (SAM): 20 Nov
Parcel Airlift Mail (PAL): 01 Dec
First Class Mail Cards/Letters: 04 Dec
    Priority Mail 04 Dec
***THESE DATES WILL ENSURE PARCELS GET TO AOR BY HOLIDAYS*******

I'm in a position where I have quite a bit of pull now for our aircraft. I'll see what I can do, and as we did last year, let's have a Thanksgiving deadline for my end of the deal. Kevin, let me know what's coming and when, and I'll get with the sqadron commanders and beg them to haul our packages. They didn't mind last year. I'll try to get a Point of Contact for each of the AOR's (Iraq, Afghanistan) and we'll get the ball rolling.

Bare with me, as I'm in a 6 week academy, and I'm about 2.5 hours from my home station. I'll be home on most weekends.

  25. Hey Kevin,

When do you want to start stuffing boxes? Next Thursday? Thanksgiving is two weeks from tomorrow.

Yeah, we can do that. I was hoping for some more goodies to be dropped off, but it's been dead. I'm sure the economy is hurting everyone, so I'm grateful for what has been dropped of already. :)

  27. Cool, see ya next Thursday.

I'll be bringing some "edibles" with me.

    Still a moratorium on mags?

Yeah. We have a TON of magazines. Perhaps some newer ones would be great though.

We have so many older mags from the 70's and 80's that we were discussing selling some of them to help pay for shipping or to buy more toiletries with.

If anyone wants to come and look through them, $10 buys you 12 magazines. I'll bet we have over 500 magazines to look through.

    HELP!!!

I have a few BOXES of recent unread car & truck mags that I was given for the X-mas operation, but my job won't allow me time to run south right now.

So I need to do a relay to one of the drop off points. Anybody going from Detroit area to Glen Ellyn or Megan's???

I'll throw in some Singlefinger Speed Shop swag as well.

    My cell is 248.496.0323
