I have a 1956 Olds trunk lid that I am selling....a guy wanted to know if it came off of a 88 or a 98. My question is, aren't they the same? Other than the side trim and badges, aren't the body panels the same? Would it make a difference if it was a 2 or 4 door on the trunk lid? Thanks in advance!
Pretty sure that there is a difference in the 2 door and 4 door. I don't think that the 88 is any smaller than the 98, the trim on the lid is probably different.
The 98s are larger. Not sure if they are simply longer, or if they are longer and wider. The frames between a 98 and 88 DON'T interchange. A lot of mechanical parts do interchange, but I have no idea on the trunk lid. I have a '54 holiday and a '54 4 door. It's surprising to see them side by side as they are quite different.
There are three different trunk lids that interchange on all 54 - 56 Oldsmobiles the only difference, if any, for each application would be holes for different moldings: 1 - 88 convertible and 2 dr Holiday 2 - 88 all other body styles 3 - 98 all The 88 trunks also fit some 55 - 56 Buicks, not sure which.
The trunk lids will interchange, the only difference being the mounting holes for the trim. The 98 body has a panel between the back window and trunk lid while the 88 trunk lid goes up to the window. Doors, front guards, bumpers etc all interchange between the 98 & 88. Hope this clarifies it. Russell
