History Old drag strips texas, name them

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Tinker51, Jan 26, 2009.

  1. Trust me, I'm no yankee, far from it!!!:D

I don't have the actual cars either. I just enjoy researching Thunderbolts and those mentioned here are sort of mystery cars. I'm trying to verify if they are possibly the same car that was repainted or two seperate cars. Also would like to find out what happened to them. There are shots of both cars on this website.

    Thanks for your help.

Tinker, thank and no offense taken. I have been away with the military since 2001 and would probably be considered more of a foreigner due to the time spent over seas LOL.

One of the owners stated that a fellow by the name of Paul was the first person to actually purchase the car in Fort Worth. It ended up with the last titled owner in the early 90s in Winnsboro Texas a guy named Cox.

Any help from the old timers would help. Thanks.

I remember Como very well. Lots of stories from that track. Also went to I-20 a few times. Have some pictures from there if I can find them.

Can I get some help from my neighbors to the east?

I am looking for info on two race cars form Texas.
The first one was a regional qualifier from Amarillo I believe.
the car is named "Neighbor's Complaint"

The second car is my next door neighbors called "Quarter Flash"

    Both cars are from Texas
If anyone saw these cars run or know any history it would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks!

I think Como ran from about 1968 to 1979 but not exactly sure. Probably close to that.

I spent 2 years in Tyler at TJC for X-Ray school. Being from Washington State, born in Alaska, and an Air Force brat, I got called a YANKEE a lot. I had 2 responses: the first was, what's a YANKEE, to which I was told, anyone north of the Mason-Dixon line, asked where the Mason-Dixon line was and NEVER got a right answer (I knew where it was all along). Second was, after being called a YANKEE I'd say, you know what, to the rest of the world, we're all YANKEES. They'd get a puzzeled look on their face. But, TEXANS are the greatest people I've run into anywhere! My father was from San Antonio, my mother from Bartlesville, Oklahoma. Bottom line, we're all Heinz 57 in blood. Bill Murray, in the movie "Stripes", said something to the effect, we're all mutts, thrown out of their former countries because we were'nt wanted.

Charles, Thanks for your service to our country. I almost joined the Navy but ended up flying Black Hawks in the Army and Guard. I have been really lucky.

One of the previous owners had told me that after the Cyclones days on the strip it was a terror on the street. He mentioned a popular place were some heavy street racing took place, I think he said it was south of Fort Worth. Will call again and get some more details. Maybe that will triger some memories.

    Thanks again for your help.

Charles, thought this may be of interest to the board. The link bellow is of the 1970 Spring Nationals at Dallas. The gentleman that posted the video father took some 8mm film of the event and had it transfered to digital.

    Thanks.

Drove by the Green Valley site the other day.

Northease corner of Bursey Road and Smithfield Road intersection.

Thanx to Larry for the map!!

Ground shot of what is left of the race surface, maybe 150 yards of pavement in the middle of a bunch of 300K - 400K houses it looks like.

Real sad . . . , plenty of good memories, though.

Am I interpreting this right... there was a track in downtown Ardmore before the existing Ardmore Dragway near Springer? I had heard of drags in Ardmore in 1954 but ass-U-me'd that it was the same dragstrip that still runs.

Several old drag strips can be seen on http://www.hotrodchat.com/gallery/ In album 9 picture 194 is the old freeway or gulf freeway drag strip east of Houston. There was also Dayton Tx strip-Victoria-Corpus christy-porter ect In the mid to late 50's many strips poped up

  22. Porter was cool. But the Tower side had a scary woopdeedoo at the top end. Then the return road was another obsticle full of pot holes and chick bones !

That return road was sure close to the crowd. Some of them would let you know it if you got beat and didn't cover their BET !!!

My dad raced at all of those mentioned by Larry T. Both Quanah and Childress had tracks. Quanah used a stop light the city donated when all the other tracks were still using flaggers. My dad would watch the guy flipping the switch from red to green instead of watching the light....holeshots anyone?

Shore do!!! I put many a pass on that track in my '55 Chevy when I was a wee lad of 17.. I watched another 55 Chevy (I/G, I think) inline 6 powered, get loose at about half track and roll several times.. They carried the driver off in an ambulance. I raced there and Golden Triangle Dragstrip until Uncle Sam called me to service in 1964.

Wayne-O, we probably know each other.. I have lived in Beaumont all 66 years of my life.

My uncle, Robert Gilman, was killed at the Como Drag Strip in June 1967. I have been trying to find information, articles, or pictures about him on the web, but haven't had much luck. I do not know the name of the car he raced, but he was driving a Corvette-powered MG dragster when he was killed. He was a 3 time AHRA champ. That's about all I know, so if there is anyone out there with information, it would be greatly appreciated.

    Thank you,

    Linda Halliburton

  28. Linda,I knew Robt Gilman very well.dont know where you got information but Robert raced a very modified T bucket on a dragster type frame.
The frame broke by the front wheels and the car pole vaulted and killed him I never saw a modified MG..and I'm not too sure about him being a 3 time AHRA Champ.....rather doubt it...Robert liked to run at the little outlaw strips..

Does anyone remember a guy that ran a red '55 c/mp chevrolet named Gene Melia, I think he won most of the time there
Also there was a guy that ran mostly street races, hung around Princes on Jensen a lot. He had a white '62 409 Impala hardly ever got beat, the only time I saw him get beat was by a 426 Dodge from out of town never saw the guy again. I think the guy that owned the 409 was Butch Camp
