Ok I think this is damn near perfect ! A big thanks to @Stogy for the photoshop .

so I found a couple sets of caddy caps

I’m getting them tomorrow , read how to mount them securely.

I got 2 questions as I’ve googled and got different responses.

will 40 merc and 40 Ford skirts be the same ?
What’s the difference between fender mount and flush mount ?
Where should I buy skirts ?

Also what size (15”) and what brand of WWW should should I get ?

also would spot lights work on this car ?

The rear end has been swapped to parallel leaf so removing a leaf or lowering blocks is easy

the front is stock 40 merc with a disc brake kit .
Are shackles and good way to get 2” drop ?
Couple guys on the Hamb and eBay are selling them cheap

    hints , tips , advice ?

Thanks @VANDENPLAS, I second no to spots...I'm not against them, just not for this application...am I excited...you betcha!!...

Van I think all the answers you need will be better handled by our well informed membership...including what I mentioned above...I'm far less educated on the Custom Culture than Moriarity...

Spots are certainly something that can be added as you desire anytime...

  7. IMHO:
No spots. The car looks to smooth in the rendering to be cluttered up with additional stuff.
Don't make a taildragger out of it!
No dual antennas with fox tails.
Not so sure about the skirts, but I'll give you that one, since it's your car and cash.
No visor (I know you didn't say anything about that, I'm just heading it off at the pass before anyone makes the suggestion)
If the rear springs are below the axle, lowering blocks are easier that removing a leaf.
Longer shackles will drop the front, just make sure your bushings and bolts are in good shape.
You may not have much choice on whitewall width (depending on the tire size you want), but IMO anything over 3" wide would look 'overdone' and exaggerated.
In terms of tire size, I wouldn't go bigger than 7.50's on the rear, or 7.10's on the front. (or radial equivalents.)
    Good luck and..."Happy Motoring"

I like the skirts. Wouldn't make tail dragger out of it. Nose high would make a lot of empty space between the wheel and the fender.

  9. Spots are just a thought

    no antenna’s or tails

skirts , are pretty much gonna happen …. As long as I can find repops (that fit )at the prices I’ve seen , originals simply are in crazy price land !

    visor ?!?!

Yup , spring is below the axle , gonna take a look at what’s exactly back there in the next little bit at the weather is getting hood up here … finally ! Once I see what’s going on I’ll make a better decision. Either way it’ll be easy peasy japonesey.

Shackles to lower the front seem like a cheap easy way to lower the front a couple inches but I’ve read mixed reviews on the use of them

Yea tire size will be close to or the same as what I have now , I don’t need no big ol’ fatties on the old girl !

What do you want to change the title to? and YES absolutely make it a tail dragger, 40 Mercs are a natural for that, I would vote yes for spots too, it is that kind of car....

I'm not Moriarity, but here's how you do it. At the top of your thread, look for the link "Thread Tools." Hover your cursor over the little triangle in a circle. You'll then see the following drop-menu of options:
    Screen Shot 2022-03-05 at 4.50.08 PM.png

Click "Edit Title" and the rest is obvious. Works in all of your threads, including ads.

Oh, and the project looks very cool. :D

Van that other Thread you mentioned had a Merc shared that sat pretty nice...I'd call it lowered just right rather than a Taildragger and that is a matter of what makes you smile the most...

I do believe there is a slight but not excessive nose up...it's all about period balance...so I see the definition is in fact Taildragger...Thanks @Moriarity...

yeah, a 40 merc can't sit nose down, it just doesn't work on those cars....

you may get some side sway with the longer shackles

tail dragger primarily means the rear is lower than the front

  17. Iron trap garage on YouTube just did a video recently about fitting skirts to Mercury rear fenders. Since the Merc fender opening is smaller than a Ford, the latch mechanism needs some fab.

sway bar won't help. you would need a panhard bar to keep it from swaying on the long shackles

The lines are perfect so no gee gaws to mess it up, no spots.

  22. Thanks @Dan Hay so according to Iron trap it’s just the mounting clip that’s different ?

if that’s the case it’s an easy enough fix

very much on the fence with 39 head lights to 40 head lights .

both are friggin sexy in there own ways if you ask me

Add spotlights if you want to run spotlights. Don’t do anything to please somebody else.

  27. No panhard needed, just an axle locating fork. Better than a dead perch anyway. added LONG shackles will be fine

In my opinion, rather than searching for random parts that may look good on the Merc, you should pick an Era/Style/Theme you like, and buy/intall the parts that compliment that era/style...AND STICK TO IT!!!

In my case I picked an era and a theme.
I wanted a mild custom '36 that you might see at an Autorama in the early/mid 60s. Something an "average Joe" with a small budget might build...customized with lots of detail, chrome and accessories...but not taken it too far.
I've received some grumbling on the HAMB
about the stance...fuck 'em...it IS era correct...just not the era "they" want it to be in.
I didn't want a leadsled or tail dragger (they were a little before my time).
I remember the hot rods at the mid '60s car shows that I loved had that "California Rake"...big & little tires, a dropped axle and a "heavier than stock" engine weighing the nose down.
