Offenhouser flat head??

    a fellow car guy wound up with a set of offenhouser flat heads,they have a casting number on them of 400.can anyone tell me anything about these?thanks guys!

    400 = 8:1 Compression, I believe.....

    Compression ratio will depend on displacement and relief characteristics, if any. I think the 400 may designate that the combustion chamber is meant to be used with a maximum .400" lift cam.

    I use those heads on my 255cui, and with 4" stroke and 3 3/16" bore they give compression 8,5. The stamped number tells the maximum cam lift they accept, I think they are made for .475 too.

    400 typically means valve clearance, so you can run a .400" lift cam...
