I found these pictures of this offbeat funnycar. It's Shel Konblett's "Peanuts" 1966 Ford LTD 4 door hardtop sporting a vinyl roof !! I know there were some unusual body styles paraded at the strip in the early days of funny cars. Dave Zachary ran a 1968 Cadillac Eldorado with an injected big block Chev. Bill Kraft ran a hemi powered Rambler Marlin but I'm not sure if it was a match racer or funny car. Anyone else have any pictures or information on any offbeat funnycars ? If I'm covering ground which has already been covered please delete my post. Thanks.
Astro Supreme's?...really?...you think so?...I see the "ASTRO"" decal on the quarter panel...custom made?....they look like Supreme's, but the rears also look to be a 16" dia.,...as far as my research tells, they never built a 16" wheel...how bitchin' would it be to find a pair of those?!
The rear wheels may be 15" centres welded to a 16" rim ?? There looks to be a lip on the inside of the rim. Custom made ? I don't think I would like to be running welded rims on the back of a funny car. Wouldn't be much fun if the rim parted company with the centre !!! Seems an odd choice of wheel but who knows.
Not too many odd funnies really. Most were muscle car bodies anyways...Much cooler looking than todays f/c for sure...Most odder ones were from the 60`s, and not 70`s...There are some rare ones, but I dont think tha is what you are looking for. I love the funny cars of the60`s-70`s. Whether they were Chevy, Ford. Mopar, AMC, etc...But some were not too common...Before the funny cars, were the altered wheelbase...
The Bronco Buster was Doug Nash. It was a tiny little thing with a 289 Ford and a stick shift. Fun to watch. Squirrely like a Fuel Altered, the day I saw it. I think Doug developed his 5 speeds with it.
A larger pic of the Brocno buster...Injected 289 in it. Later put a supercharger on it. Had thin aluminum chassis which made it light, It and the driver weighed around 1700lbs. Ran low to mid 8`s
Thing ran mid 9`s. And was actually a metal body welded together into a flip body. Had square tubing chassis also. Dave achery was later killed when the car flipped and the cage did not hold up...Had an injected Chevrolet motor...
Nothing offbeat about any fuuny cars really, to me atleast. Like I said , they went from altered wheelbase to flip bodies. So what exactly is your point again?...I feel all funny cars from the 60`s are pretty odd/rare actually. Most funny cars, people think of, are from the 70`s to present...But if you want info on the pictures I have posted, I can give it also...
I think something different is the point. An unusual body style at the time. You posted a Rebel. That Eldorado etc. I'm thinking that qualifies and thats what he was looking for.
