I give up...been calling & driving around all day. Does anyone know of a metal supplier that carries 3003 H-14 Aluminum, thickness .062 or .063. Any leads would be great. Thanks

I would assume you already tried Industrial Metal Supply in San Fernando. That's where I get all of my stuff.

You might try Washington Hardware. They carry aluminum (at least they used to) along with about a million other things.

Why 3003 ? 5052 is cheaper and streches better. Are you going to anneal it?

I've been doing some reading on here and most were recommending 3003. I was told at Schor it bends easier. They don't carry it and quoted me like $250. I'm try to keep this a cheap project. I am going to form these panels by hand and with tools I have laying around in the garage. Basically, I don't know what I'm doing.:D

  12. I'd have to disagree with this. 5052 is relatively hateful stuff to shape. Not as bad as 2024 or 6061 but really hard to shape. Yes, you can anneal it but it work hardens very quickly.

I'd never attempt anything like this in 5052:

In 3003 the metal did not fight me like 5052 would have. That is, it stretched where I wanted to stretch it and shrunk where I wanted to shrink it.

Most all aluminum car bodies are made from 3003 H14 in various thickness but .050 or .063 are the norm. I'm using .063 on my roadster and welding it with 1100 rod (pure aluminum) which allows me to work continue to stretch and shrink the seams. When I was using 4041 rod, the welds would crack when I continued to work them.

I'd think ANY steel supplier can get 3003 in .063 overnight...especially in the LA area. If I can get it in the middle of nowhere Alabama, you should have no problem. I bought 4 sheets last week and gave $88 for each 4x8 sheet.

You going to find it hard to find a cheap piece of 3003 for sale to the general public. If you know somone who works for an Areospace company, you might try that. Other wise you might try pawing through the rem piles at places like Schorr, or metal depot or all the way up to IPS in El Monte. places that sell rems usualy don't know what there inventory is. So you have to go there and searce through it. The alloy is printed on the sheet.

I agree, I wouldn't form fenders or anything intricate like what you are showing out of 5052, but he is looking for mateial for a hood and sides.

I do deep draw work and I can strech 5052 H-32 20-25% more then 3003

Summit Steel, here in Huntington doesn't stock it, but can have it next day. They're basically on the corner of Graham and Edinger. Not sure if that's too far for you or not. I always hear about IMS too, but since Summit is practically across the street from me I just go there.

OH! BTW... The 4x8 sheet I priced (.060 I think) was around $120 with tax. No extra fees for the order or anything either. Aluminum was $3.69 a pound a the the time and the sheet was 29-pounds.

McFly... I know this was forever ago, but what did you end up doing for your hood?? Pictures?? Louvers?? How about fastening?? I'm thinking of making a "road trip" hood for mine. Would like to see how you made out with everything.

Like Bealieu said IMS in Irvine has Rems in Stock if you don't want a 4' x 12" sheet. Open to the public and open Saturdays 8am to 12pm. 949-250-3343

I ended up using steel, because eventually I want to paint the car down the road. I bought steel with galvanized coating (it will not rust), so it can appear to be aluminum in the mean time. It will be a pain to strip it, but I don't really care right now. I'll cross that bridge when I get to it.

Eric Vaughn punched the louvers with an old die from Gray Baskerville's roadster...I thought that was pretty neat.

Fasteners ended up being just hardware from Mcfadden Dales. Nothing special, just a super simple set-up that I stole from Matt Seret right here on the HAMB. Well, it resembles Matt's style...without his touch.

The hood sucks...I made it in a hurry for the Pasadena reliabilty run, because of threatening rain. It was formed on my work bench and light pole outside.:D Anyone wanna help me get it straight on a english wheel?

Here are some shots pre-hood...and a rendering of the hood.

The real hood in the last pic looks better on the net than in person.

The last 3 are what I want to be when I grow up. This car does it for me.

I used to get my 3003 H14 from the local metal supply house for doing race & pro street stuff. They left town. I shopped around and found the same stuff at a much better price from a commercial roofing supply place in Buffalo. They even had several different colors in stock. I buy .030 & .045. 4' x 10' sheets Never asked if they had anything thicker as I didn't need it

Now that would be worth seeing. What did your neighbors think stretchin sheet metal around a light pole?

I can see why you like the black roadster's hood. That whole roadster is way neat!

I gotta think about building me a hood too. I'm glad this was pushed btt.

Looks good man! Those louvers are PERFECT! Nice and simple! I dig it!

I'm sure the neighbors were at their windows like "honey! That guy is out there playing with that light pole again! Quick! Come check this out!"

    HAHA! :D
