The only thing that makes me sick of this thread is the fact that I can do work almost as good as you... in photoshop.

Keep up the posts - they are inspiring to say the least.

  2. Uninteresting! Having a Model A project myself, and with limited experience doing metal work, this thread has been very helpful and quite the confidence booster for me. Keep it coming Flop.

    Thanks for the info Flop

I see you leave the backside as is, how do you stretch the weld?

How long are your welds ?

Do you work work each weld as then?

    Thanks, always looking to learn.

    thanks again guys

rc just a hammer and dolly on the welds.but my big concern in the metal right around the welds thats what gives me the smooth look i believe . it really depends on the length of the welds . all depends how the metal is acting getting high, really sucking in or just kinda staying in the same general shape. but on general its about an inch of welding at a time . i usually tack an inch from the last place i welded and put a tack inbetween the new tack and my last ground and finished weld.i work the metal as i go.

well these are a set of splash aprons that looked decent until i got em back from the blasters.sand blaster always finds all kinds of nice things for me to fix!

this was all lap tacked i guess you could call it.

i ran a grinder down the slit to make it a butt weld

    Good looking work Flop!

One suggestion though, round the corners of your rectangular patches. Sharp corners cause more shrink from welding in a smaller area that you have to stretch back out.

I have to thank you Flop for showing it s possible .
I m working on a OT car for a friend ( GMC truck sierra step side 92 ) , rebuilding the rockers and doors . The easiest way was cutting the rockers to work on them in the garage :p
I m not yet "metal finish" , but at least 1/32 or even 1/64 .
Not so bad for me .
This would not have been possible without reading topics as yourse .

Question : I noticed , you finish each side of a patch perfectly before welding another side .
Is there a reason why , or just the way you like to work ?
Just hope you understand what I mean ..
    Thanks .

I hope you don t mind me showing what I did tonight :

Not perfect , no more gas in the bottle so flux core 0.35 ..

    mmm brass and screws!

the bead rod was broke as well

used my bead roller to make the step

next fix the mess and get the pan to fit

just used the break to make the bend and a little shrinker stretcher action

i have to use a paper template to make this i can never get it in one piece ...
