ok,i just built my big block and i thought i would take the th 400 to the tranny shop and get the whole thing built.well about 900 bucks later and a bunch of grumbling ,i took it home and put it in the old chevy.cranked it up at 5pm today. was going to run it through the gears and let the pumps lube a bit and get it all primed up..well,there was no reverse..it would only go forward, went through all the gears..forward,forward,forward,neutral,forward,park.
called the tranny guy,he said my shifter linkage was out of adjustment,so i disconnect the linkage and manually go through the gears...all forward.
anyone ever experience this kind of malady on a new rebuild??

the tranny guy is getting it back when the sun comes up....

Did have such a thing happen to a C-4 in Denver one time. The trans was built by a guy that had good eyes. Put it in, started it up and no reverse. Pulled it out and took it back and the guy that could see. He looked at it and couldn't find anything.

There was another guy working in the shop that was blind. He had a "look" at it and found an O ring with a little ding on it in the reverse circuit. You cold only see it if you looked real hard. But the blind guy could feel it. Put a new one in and reverse was there.

Anyway got to take trans out and put it back in twice.

Yup, just had a trans do the same thing..sometimes it didn't want to go into drive either.. A plunger in the trans was sticking. Fluid would bypass through the valvebody.. Jason.

Maybe missing or incorrectly position check ball. Also there are numerous length servo pins produced. Maybe incorrect length was installed. Only closer inspection will tell.......maybe you will get lucky and not have to remove the trans.
    Good luck

  11. Had same problem with a freshly re-built 3AT,
Two of the metal pipes inside the box had been crossed,
Took the transmission people minutes to solve,
And probably could have been sorted with the trans still in.

The linkage inside the pan is not hooked up to the valve. Don't ask me how I know.

99 out of 100, it's a problem that can be solved with the trans in the car, and most likely something very simple that was overlooked or is sticking.

Give your tranny guy a chance to make it right, and then report back to us.

did you have them put a shift kit in it or tell themto make it shift hard? if so they might have drilled the wrong hole in the plate. I know because it happend to me.If I remeber wright 1st and reverse is on the same band/clutch. I'm sayingits in the valve body would be my guess. when you find out let us know

i would have mentioned that if i saw this post yesterday:rolleyes: seems to happen here isa previous tranny issue , the litte S hook that wasn't hooked:p

quote=oldchevyseller;2334062]i bet it is the little s hook looking pin that runs the valve actuater in side, if you booble that all when putting the trans back together it will just have reverse , where it sits, so take off the pan and see[/quote]

Re: HELP! TH350 only got reverse!
<HR style="COLOR: #e5e5e5; BACKGROUND-COLOR: #e5e5e5" SIZE=1>Thankyou everybody for your help and advice. The problem was indeed as "oldchevyseller" said- the s link installed back to front! I guess i wasn't concentrating the day i done the b&m kit!
    Thanks again, Steve.
