Nice weekend to chop a 34 5 window coupe.

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Kiwi Kev, Nov 14, 2009.

  1. My friend Greg is giving his 34 5w coupe a major rebuild. He built it from scratch and drove it for several years as a channeled, unchopped driver. So Cal guys may remember it by it's trunk lid consisting of inner skin only. His new plan is for 60's drag style with set back Chevy, radiator in the back with Moon tank and lexan filled grill shell. The all new chassis is from Duane at Kiwi Konnection in Bakersfield. He has 4 hole magnesium Halibrands for the rear. A radical chop was needed so guess what we are doing this weekend. Here are the pictures from Saturday

We spent many hours messing with the doors to make them fit in the holes and getting the swages to line up. We cut the tops off and tacked the doors in the holes. Next we added bracing inside the body so nothing could move once the butchery begins.........

A 5 1/5" chop was chosen so next came some careful studying of where to cut, then some masking tape lines and careful measuring followed. The area between the tape was getting removed. I have seen many methods to lay out a chop (dykem, spray paint etc) but tape always works quick and simple, flexible and accurate for me.

Posts are getting leaned back so we left them kinda long for now. Porta Band had them cut in about a minute each. 4 1/2" angle grinder with Walter Zip cutoff wheel made short work of everything else. those wheels are unreal. Cut this whole top off with one wheel and it not even half wore out.

Greg looks pretty happy here, he was a little nervous before we began cutting.

  11. The roof is moved all the way back, the B pillars will be cut free and moved forward. The cowl will be cut completely across so the posts can be laid back with no bumps at the bottom. There will be alot of cutting and tacking tomorrow.

Sure hope I can figure this mess out:eek:

BTW, Kevin, with that much chop, you planning on using the rear garnish moulding? I need one for my '33. PM me if you want to sell it.

  22. More chop than I would have chosen, but I have to agree that it looks terrific.

    Here's one for ya.

    Circa 1955 on a photography class walk-around.
On the west side of Catalina opposite the lawn that used to be in front of VHS auditorium.

Used to see three guys in it fairly often, but most times two when the owner was picking up his girl friend.
