In '56, Thunderbirds came with either a 292 or 312. So it could be a "Thunderbird" engine and still be a 292. The 272 V-8 was also available in full-size Ford cars in '56, but not in Thunderbirds.

Just did a quick internet search. Here's what I found:

In '56, the "Thunderbird package" was the 292 V-8, as opposed to the regular 272. The 312 was an optional engine, but not automatically part of the Thunderbird package .

  4. Thanks! I suppose I could have done that same thing...

    and he scores.....

Really nice pics. We need to get together this summer and cruise these 2 together. I just met a guy last night that has a 57 Ford 2 door that is the exact color as the wagon. Neat old car. We'll have to get the 3 together for some pics.

  7. Me too! However, I do know the trip is going to be a little longer. :D

See ya in Dewey in May? SK500!

  9. Wow! Excellent score!

  10. Congrats! 55-56 fords have always been my favorites. Seems there were more mid-year fords than anything else when I was in high school..62-66.
I had a green and white 55 club mainline 2 door sedan given as a graduation gift. I ran it hard until I went into the military.
2 years ago I bought another 55 2 door...this time a black fairlane with another 272, 3 speed...great car. I drove it to the HAMB drags in 08 where I installed for-sale signs and it sold the next week... I miss it.
    They're wonderful cars.

  14. Just a quick update...I haven't done much to "Ruth", as she was affectionately called by the original owner, other than drive it this summer. After adopting my two girls in March, we have been busy to say the least.

However, I did spend a little time buffing it and had to go ahead and drop it a little before taking it to Salina a few weeks back. Here are some pics I took there.

Smith brothers have all the cool cars... Awesome

  20. Yea...it seems we have run across a few "survivors" in the past few years. I thought Matt's 54 was a great find (and still do) until I tripped across this Ford.

And, thanks for all the comments guys. I am definitely enjoying this car even though I didn't build it. I have found that with four kids now, if I want to drive an old car it better not be a big project. :D

One of the more interesting stories I've read on here for awhile.
(I know it's an older thread, but just saw it.)

    Really a great looking Ford!

WOW what a good looking car!!!! I've had a love for 56's for years. They are my favorite 'full fendered' cars.

  29. Thanks for the comments guys. No updates really. I have just been enjoying the car and haven't done much to it other than a few minor things like replacing brake hoses, etc. I did pick up a 3x2 intake but still need to round up some carburetors. I am getting tired of fighting the original 4 barrel.
