I am wondering if there are any local H.A.M.B.ers in the s.f. Bay Area who can school me on rebuilding a 1957 Chevy rear end? I know the basics but want to make sure that the rear end is still serviceable. I don't want to be throwing good money after a bad unit. Thanks, Joe Sent from my iPad using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
There ain't all that much to it, if you are rebuilding it. Unless the housing bent, or it has taken on water (rusty inside), or spun a bearing (fairly rare), then doing one over is much the same as any other rear end. Pull the axles and the pumpkin, look inside. Squished dead plants and dinosaurs are good. Rust is not good. On the brake end, if they are missing, or there are a lot of parts missing, take that into account.
