Hi, as you can see by my handle I can keep fibreglass from rusting but I can't stop the panels for my 27 Ford roadster from rusting. What could I wipe or spray on these panels while I am fitting them and or working on them.
Search for the thread titled: "Serious Rust Removal" here on the HAMB. This thread lists several methods for rust control/removal. Lots of great ideas in this thread. I use Ospho, which is a brand name of a product that I purchased at a Sherwin Williams Paint store. You can just load it into a spray bottle (like the ones for Windex window cleaner) and spray the product onto the panel. It is basically phosphoric acid.
I use PPG 1791/1792 for a shop coat. There's just something about putting penetrating oil on a body that will see paint that just isn't right to a bodyman / painter.
Gibbs Brand works. Old blocks, after, acid dipping tend to want to rust. I spray mine down with Gibbs, let them dry, wipe with a towel and spray with Zero Rust primer. paint sticks and no rust. I didn't believe it either when I read it. + it's probably the best penetrant that I've found for removing head studs from Flatheads that have seen service for over 60 years. Knock on wood I haven't broke one since useing the stuff.
You said it right about the oil !!!! I was picking up my Rod Bods body from the guy in Nevada and when I pulled up he was spraying it down with WD-40 (it was raining) and when the car was finally painted a couple years later it needed to be thouroughly blasted and sanded and prepped like 2 times to get rid of the remnants of oil , what a f-ing nightmare , along with some serious coin !!!!
Maybe try some iron phoshate. Powder coaters use it. It's supposed to cut down on corrosion and increase paint bond. I've never used it but I've got some ordered to try on some parts that I'm going to have powder coated. I can post the results, if there's any interest. Here's a couple of links. http://powder365.com/store/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=3&products_id=349 http://caswellplating.com/powder/pcprimer.html
Try this stuff Captain Lee's from Master Series,, they sell similar to POR 15,,,,Captain Lee's is a wipe on coating that disolves rust and leaves a coating of zinc chromate,,,as long as the parts are inside they will not rust,,,,my 51 was in the garage for 7 years and wiped with this,,,,,,,try it YOU WILL LIKE IT,,,,,they have frame paint and a series of other coatings... I always keep a gallon and it goes a long long long way...
I had heard about gibbs on here. Never used it. I've been working on my 49 Ford in bare metal, and thought I would give it a try. I LOVE the stuff. Just wipe it on, and the metal stays nice and shiny. I'm a believer. Rich
I use a product called "phix"...basically a phosphorous acid. Pour some into a spray bottle and coat the metal....rust deposits may need a little scrubbing with a scotchbrite pad..protects the metal and keeps the rust away in the future too.. I buy it at my paint supply store. A gallon was a little over 50 bux..will do an entire body, inside and out. They also sell a smaller spray bottle of the stuff for $18. Use rubber gloves
