I'm using ppg k-36 primer for the first time. Can the second coat be applied over sanded thru spots without causing lifting or do the sanded thru areas need to be sealed first? It's k-36 over dp-74 Thanks
Never had a lifting problem with k36. If you break thru to bare metal, then a little etch prime on the bare spots is a good idea
Agreed. You'll be sanding over everything anyway, so laying some etch over the bare metal followed by another coat of K36 won't hurt.
I'm not a fan of etching primers, old technology. Epoxy is the way to go over bare steel today (my opinion). I believe k36 can be applied over bare metal. If you only have a small spot that u cut thru and do not want to epoxy it, I would just shoot the k36 on it and move on.
I'm going to spare the epoxy vs. etch debate on this one... If the spots are small, like smaller than a dollar bill, I wouldn't worry about and just K36 right over it.
i used k 36 for years, after switching from k-200. dont sweat a few bare metal spots, just re-coat. the etch certianly wont hurt either, but not required. my willys coupe is 12 years old on k-36, no cracks or shrinkage. skull
Thanks guys!! They are just small spots. I was just worried about it lifting. I used something a few years ago that would lift everytime you reapplied it. You had to put a sealer on before you could recoat. I don't remember now what it was but it was a real pain in the ass. Just wanted to make sure I wasn't going to run into that with the k-36. I couldn't find any mention of it on the ppg website but as usuall the HAMB comes thru with the answer!
