I recently picked up a 1958 Buick Special with a 364, it is leaking badly from around the oil filter housing where it mounts to the block. The transmission was recently rebuilt and I suspect the oil filter housing may have been "bumped" or pried on so it may be cracked. I would like to change to a spin-on filter, what are my options and what will interchange as far as later model nailheads? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
There are a couple of ways to deal with this. You can use a later model housing. There is a guy that sells an adapter to convert your present one to spin on. I'd check to see if yours is cracker or if there is just a bad gasket. Or I can sell you a plate to mount a remote filter.
If you have a pic of what you need...I have a couple of GM filter mounts but not sure what they came off of, and no need for gm stuff in this shop .
I would think a 1960 and up Nailhead oil filter adapter might work as the blocks are probably the same as far as the oil filter area. I am probably going to do this with my 58 and also with my 59 Olds. The Olds had cartridge or spin on in 59. I have the early cartridge type. If I do this I might just modify my 303 in my 50 Olds the same for spin on.
I think you need one from a '59-'61 364. Here is a good write-up: http://www.rowand.net/Shop/Tech/BuickSpinOnOilFilterConversion.htm
Thanks for the link. I like the oil filter enterprises units. They look professional and for a decent price. Think about 3 of them should do for my cars.
