Education please- What does a wiring machine do?
Reminds me of the old Pexto machine we used in high school to make a funnel with a wired edge at the top.
You could install different forming rollers for different operations.
    I still have the funnel.

The same machine used to form an edge for a wire. I also use it to turn a lip out at right angles when I want an edge with a soft fold.

This is one of the more unusual jobs we do for the local funeral parlour. It is used when bodies are being shipped overseas. When I first started work we went to the mortuary and soldered the lid down once the body was in place.
These days they use silicone and tek screws

Well that is one I never gave thought to, a galvanized casket liner that is.
What an incredible shop that is still turning out work daily with the same equipment that has been in use for generations. Thanks for sharing and I hope you post some photos of what you do with some of the machines we may not be familiar with.

  7. Thanks so much for the link from the other place. I too admired the wooden floor holding all those machines as one would be hard pushed to find modern factories today using the wooden floor yet the warmth etc is darn sight better then concrete any day. I too would love to see how some of those machines work please especially the wire machine.

  8. I would love to learn everyone of those machines! Amazing shop. Add me to the lovers of wood shop floors. Almost unheard of today.

  9. Damn cool place you have there.
I can only dream of all the work that has
gone on in there over the last 100 years.

  10. Your sharing has brought back a lot of memories for me. I remember many of the shops here in Arkansas City that had
shops similar to yours. Most of them had a lot of belt-driven machines as well. We also had two foundry's that held a lot of interest for young kids. None exist today, and none of them were kept in one family. Progress sucks sometimes!

Here's a 1930 Cadillac fuel tank being built

Holding the end in the tank, you can't have too many vice grips!

Those tools come from a time when things were really well made. Look how long they have lasted and how they still work every day.

    Loved the tour.

I do have a build thread on my avatar but the pictures have also been deleted by photo bucket. I will have to repair this as well. Do you have a 32 sedan?

  24. Too cool! Would love to see the pics when you get em sorted again...
A friend has a Machine Shop in Ballard Washington, he is 5th generation in his family. I think they opened it in 1870. It still has the original setup using the leather straps to power machines!

A fordor, and a 5 window coupe, - the coupe I always said was the worst in NZ, (out of the 25 left), until I saw what you started with.......

Its hard to imagine any business that you would start up today that would remain relevant in 100 years.
Let alone still utilizing equipment with the age that yours has.
    Enjoyed your pictures and story.
    Thank
