Today's efforts at my mates work shop. removed the rear axel, ImageUploadedByH.A.M.B.1394270902.531782.jpg
Chassis notch cut out inner and outer, we tried to make it flow smooth not just cut and shut it, just need to add a strap on the bottom side and box out the inner and weld in place
    ImageUploadedByH.A.M.B.1394270130.147626.jpg ImageUploadedByH.A.M.B.1394270152.660204.jpg ImageUploadedByH.A.M.B.1394270829.421972.jpg
The rear floor under the rear seat was cut out above the lower control arms and just in front of the rear seat the tunnel was cut out 8 inches.

Above the rear diff the floor was cut to clear
    ImageUploadedByH.A.M.B.1394270482.735040.jpg
We fabricated the new tunnel and tacked it into place. ImageUploadedByH.A.M.B.1394270683.980111.jpg ImageUploadedByH.A.M.B.1394270701.993616.jpg ImageUploadedByH.A.M.B.1394270714.379771.jpg
It's a good feeling to be working on the old girl again, I'm lucky too have a good mate to help me out it makes it heaps easier.

Darren, KB here again. Glad to see you back at it. It appears that you are doing everything right to clearance the differential. Have you decided on using the original torque tube diff or are you changing to an open drive line?
I recommend that you do as I did and find the entire 90s era chevy Caprise rear end and triangulated 4 bar linkage to install onto your frame. The linkage pads with trimming will match up to welding right where the "X" member approach the main rails. You just trim the upper control arms crossmember to fit between you Buick rails. The Caprise has the same 5 on 5" lug pattern, and is completely self-contained including a anti-roll bar that the Buick never had. The Caprise's standard gear is a 3.08:1 which is nearly ideal with the low RPM straight eight for highway cruising. Other gear ratios like 3.42 are readily available if you are using an overdrive transmission. The "E" brake cables are a simple lashup to the Buick linkage. The new rearend can use the stock Buick upper coil pockets for coils or air bags. The Caprise suspension is even smoother and more luxurious than the original Buicks and GM has several different springs that can be used to tune the ride. I settled on Monte Carlo springs for ours and the ride and handling is better than ever. Switching to an open drive differential makes your engine/transmission option endless as well. Personally, I hope you keep the straight eight and use an adapter to a 700R4 overdrive transmission.
Now is the time to make that decision and evaluate those cost implications. I paid $200 for a 700R4 plus $200 to have it checked and new seals and gaskets installed. The rear end complete with rails and linkage cost another $200 from a wrecking yard. The new driveshaft was about $400 with yokes and U joints. The big expense was the Bendtsen trans adapter, at $1000 but it included everything needed to bolt up any chev transmission including a new flex plate and high torque starter.
That's the long and short of the upgrades that I did to make our Sedanette a cruiser for the modern road conditions. Prior to that we were getting run over by little Dodge Neons, very humiliating!
Keep up the great work. Best Regards and good Luck with all your endeavors, KB.

I am planning to keep all the stock differential, in Australia those chev rear ends will be hard to find and not mention shipping to aus.
    Cheers Darren

A couple of rear floor sections for under the rear seat, trial fit. And also a dome for the diff housing. ImageUploadedByH.A.M.B.1394531144.090354.jpg

Great progress, I like what you're doing! Keep it up.

  17. Much the same. It's running okay now. Some rust to cut out and then am booking in an engineer to certify it . That is the scariest bit. Just getting time off to organise this stuff is the main thing.
Love what your doing. I still miss my 52 super and 55 Century.

Small up date final position of the diff, the tyres (670 r15) will just touch the top of the wheel tubs when fully dropped down. Plenty of room everywhere else.

The bags are not in yet, we are trying to get the final ride height sorted first so we can make the cups to suit.
