So my friend brings her comet to my house to lower the back of it. It had the awesome stinkbug stance and she just wanted to level it out so that it would look more normal. My roommate and I got the back down to a normal level and just looked it over and when we got to the front and saw the springs, or what was left of them, we got a little scared. I dont know what part about this is my favorite. Ill let the pictures do the talking.
If you by chance know who did this, please take their tools away.

isnt a tac weld necessary for stack-clamping coil springs together?

  8. Kits like that were sold by the likes of JC Whitney and other in the 60's. For kids that didn't have a torch, it was a cheap way to lower a coil sprung front end.
    I'll bet thousands were sold.

I found the same kind of thing on the front of my '63 chevy pickup. The bottom coil was broken off and the rest of the spring was sitting on top. It had the same kind of spring clamps on it.

  10. Not even in my "sport-drinking" days would I have come up with that. Then again...what's the line about desperate times calling for desperate actions? Yikes, indeed!

  12. Did these clowns do any other "work" to her comet? Brakes, Ball joints, Wheel Bearings, etc

I've seen worse. I have a customer who brought me his car to do some chassis work. The rear frame section was crooked and made badly enough to have to replace it from the front of the rear wheel wells all the way back but the front clip connection is made out of angle iron and pure luck. One 4" angle length on each side. He stills drives it around, against my suggestions.

I think i would be looking that ride of hers over real good , and letting her know what you found before letting it back out on the road..
not like you were looking for more work, but in the "keep it safe" type of advice.

I think its time for a new set of front springs..what else is lurking?

Thats why I liked having annual basic safety inspections in Missouri, as opposed to here in Arizona where shit like that shares the road with my family.

I would be surprised if some of those so called "inspectors" really know what to look for..or even know what they are looking at to begin with..I bet most of those M*&^er F$%kers dont know the difference between a snow cone and a butt plug:eek::rolleyes:

    probably some autoshop flunkies..JM2C:D

who knows..you might find that one of those so called inspectors is moon lighting on the side doing Suspension lowering and up grades:(

i just put that suff up to piss off someone...did it work?

I wondered who would buy one of those kits, I think autozone here still sells them, car looks great and rides like shit.

  21. And then the goofy SOB who did it got them mixed up too:eek:!
Tack weld on a coil spring marks the spot where it will break, it changes the molecular structure.

Oh come on guys!! Who didn't lower their cars in the 70's with those? It was standard operating procedure. Buy them from Kragens along with the rear spring shackles to jack the rear end up about 6".

In this state an 'inspection' only includes high beam, low beam, brake lights and windshield wipers.
And they only inspect new cars.

Cars over 40 years old are exempt!!

Hey! They're lucky the spring was already broke! In some cases those clamps change the way the springs flex, causing more flex in that one specific free spot right next to the clamp, instead of allowing the spring to disperse the flex throughout the entire spring, thus snapping that little sucker right next to the clamp. Makes for a interesting ride thats for sure... I HATE finding those friggin clamps under a car... or even near it! -GothY-

    More like Mickey "Rat"....

Will anyone on here actually admit to installing those on their own car?
    Did they work as advertised?
    How was the ride affected?
Did you regret installing them afterwards?
