I have seen a few pictures of Model A fenders on model T's. So, I know it can be done. I am interested in the details of this conversion. Is there a better year for the swap than others? My T is already stretched to a 104" wheelbase, which I believe is the model A wheel base. So that should not be a problem. How will the 'A' aprons work? What about the rear fender radius as compared to the T body? Here is the car in question. It now has a hood and side panels. It is stretched 4" in the engine bay on a custom chassis. The reason for my interest is - I hit a deer and mangled the LF fender. Then just the other day the auto trans went out. In the process of limping it home, I didn't notice the temp gage climbing until steam was rolling. Crap! Well the car was really only supposed to be in the mock up stage. I have put 12,000 miles on it in the "mock up stage". Nothing was finish painted, etc, etc,. Now since the engine and trans are coming out anyway it is time to pull the body and finish it properly. So, it is going to be stripped down to the frame and powdercoated and painted and put back together. There is a set of '31' fenders attainable right down the street from me. I am wondering if anybody here has experience with this swap? I'd appreciate any info. Thanks
I did a 26-27 roadster with 28 fenders many, many years ago As I recall it was fairly straightforward. Terry aka dirt t Sent from my SM-G900V using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
Still the same deer. I have just never located a LF T fender to my liking. Oh and thanks again for the headlight bar. It's on the car.
Thanks manyolcars. Frame is z'ed 3" in the rear. Parallel 4 bars with coilovers. Panhard bar. Rear end is moved back in the wheel wells almost an inch, because the original T rear wheels looked too far forward to me.
I think the 28-29 fenders would look better than the 30-31 fenders. Find some pictures to compare. Just my $.02 .
INMO. 30-31 fenders look OK on 30-31 Models A's. 26-27-28-29 Ford fenders, BEST LOOKING FENDERS FORD EVER MADE. !!!
Just my opinion. Keep the T fenders. I love the look of your car as is. I'm sure that you will be able to find a suitable replacement if that one can't be fixed. The A fenders will look good too however if you go that way I second the 29-29 route. The 30-31 will look awful. In any event there is no way your car will ever look as good as it does now with the T fenders.
Doesn't Rootleib still make T fenders? As has been said, if you are going Model A, 28/29 are the ones to use. I would use the A splash aprons as well, then it should be close to a bolt on.
Alyn Swedberg made two rear fenders for a 26 Model T tudor, inch wider than stock, you couldn't tell them from Henry Ford's.. Didn't brake the bank either...
I really like '26/'27 t fenders. Matter of fact, I like 'em so much, I bought the fenders first, then I had to get a car to put them on...
All the sheetmetal is original to the car except the running boards. I just hate to buy a new fender from Rootlieb. Almost $600 to my door and I have heard horror stories about the fit. Fiberglass fenders are fairly cheap, but who wants fiberglass? I hate to lose the originality either way. I'm afraid that damaged fender is beyond my metal shaping skills. I spent about two weeks getting that fender to look good when putting the car together. It was the best fender on the car. I've just been pissed off about it. Kind of figured if it wasn't all original, I might as well change all the fenders to model A. But now you guys have me thinking to leave it all T. Either way it is coming apart this winter for paint and finishing.
Total Performance (the T-Bucket company) offered a T-roadster with '28-29 fenders & running boards that looked pretty nice- very subtle.
