Projects Mocked up some side boards today....

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Bad Bob, May 20, 2011.

  1. Okay....You're gonna laugh!
A guy I work with calls me and says he found some sideboards! I told him"how do they look?" He says,"they're pretty beat up". That's perfect! I'll text you a pic. FUCK THAT....GRAB THEM!!!
He shows up at my office this morning and drops them off. My friend and I start looking at them, and they look like side rails off a bed. We scratch our heads for a few hours, then it hits me!!! They are sides of a book shelf, hahaha! They are 2" rips of wood glued together. We hold them up to the truck and they are PERFECT!!! I trimmed them up a little and sanded the crap off them.If you look at the inside pic,(bottom left)you can see where the shelves were, haha. Now I just have to stain them a little and start painting!!!!
    WOO HOO!!!!!

I think you should have El Mirage and Bonneville a little smaller and the same size with a dash between them, so you can tell what you're trying to say.

    Example:

I would have never even thought of using the sides from a bookcase! They look great.

  9. Me neither! It just kinda worked out that way....Saved me about $300 in wood purchase, hahaha!

  10. Since you asked....

Rather than tell you what I like, may I suggest you consider what you're endevouring to achieve.

In my eyes, just like building a car, you're trying to emulate a specific 'look' from a particular era, so, to do that well, you need to be consistant across the entire package. When we talk about 'fonts' (lettering) then you need to use a style similar to what you would have used back from that period. The sample you wish to model from fits the era well, as you can imagine front store windows having that 'gold lettered' block & shadow lettering, as this was a common practice at this point of time. There are many other fonts that are applicable, so you can find something that suits your desired look, however, keep in mind as you're laying it our, "would a signwriter have done it something like this in 1949......?

See exhibit 1, define what you want on the boards, keeping the reflected period of time in mind, and follow the style.....

    Cheers,

    Drewfus

Nah, Mazooma. He should make a little dough by writing,
    "YOUR AD HERE!" :D

  15. That's what I was trying to achieve. You can throw out the first few ideas. CW's40tpu was working on it with me and came up with a great look based on a Bell Timing Assoc time tag. I think you will like what he did for me. I'll have it done soon...

  16. I like that.... Maybe it should just say "HELP...I ran out of gas again!" hahaha!

Put that on the inside so you can exchange them to the outside when you do, Ha.

Easy way to put a paper pattern onto your sideboards... use this little tool to poke tiny holes in the paper, then use charcoal dust in an old sock, pat the paper down and you have a paintable pattern of letters. Just a thought.

  20. Been there...done that!!!

  21. Here's an update to my sideboards....
#1 Went with a maple stain. I didn't want them too dark...
#2 Put some used motor oil on the posts...
#3 Put 4 coats of satin clear on them Saturday...
#4 Painted the backside satin black,on Sunday...

I'm gonna start in the lettering sometime this week. I'll post the progress pic's as I go...WISH ME LUCK,haha!
