I used some big stud bolts(note the blue teflon coating) and made up little stands from pipe and flatbar. By turning the nut, you can precisely level your work, same concept as a pipefitter's jack stand.
i agree tman, that it is essential, and it can put you in a stall, sometimes a long one. I think it can also be great inspiration to see a rod like the one you got squirreled away being mocked up(built). I hope that is what this thread is used for.

that front axle is now air bag brackets...... the old man I bought it from had it on his daily driver for 10 years
