Can anyone tell me which MINI STARTER would bolt up to a 1960 283CI with a 4L60 transmission.

¿ DOES IT TAKE THE STRAIGHT ACROSS PATTERN OR STAGGARD PATTERN?

As per the picture above............FLEX PLATE has 168 teeth.

I tried the POWERMASTER 9100 with STRAIGHT bolt pattern, whicH is suppose to work on both 153 and 168 flexplates. NO WAY will it work. Either too close to the flex-plate or too far to make contact with the flex-plate.

I read somewhere that with the 283CI and 700R4 the STAGGERED bolt pattern is needed.

SOMEONE MUST HAVE DONE THIS ALREADY???

6. all the mini starters i have used had two sets of holes straight across. you used the holes that lined up with your flexplate

Did you ever place a mini starter on a 283CI that had a 700R4 transmission ??

Someone out there must have............I can't believe I'm the ONLY one doing this.

So far, my research is leaning towards the STAGGARED pattern starter. I will find out very soon!

Thanks a bunch for the input,
Mike

It states;

On 1955-1961 V8's the aluminum bell housings can be used by having the block drilled and tapped for the starter. This must be done also on 1955-1961 V8's when using these engines with Turbo 350 or 400 or 700R4 automatic transmission, as these transmissions were always used with block mounted (1962 and newer) starters.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:eek:ffice:eek:ffice" />
The cast iron bell housings with flange mounted starters can be used on all V8's 1962-on. These can be used with block mounted starters by grinding the lower portion of the housing to clear the block mounted starter casting.

MY PROBLEM HAS BEEN RESOLVED-

The correct starter to use on a 1960 283CI block with a 4L60 transmission (700R4) is the MINI STARTER with the STAGGERED bolt pattern.

There's a reason why they make the STRAIGHT and STAGGARED bolt pattern for a 168 teeth flywheel.

Thanks for all the input...........

LG,
Mike
