It was just the other day that I wore my Marcellus, Borsch & Boyd t-shirt that I got when they appeared at the Thompson Ohio, Gasser Reunion years ago. His passing is sad news indeed, he carried on the Winged Express tradition with enthusiasm and staying true to form. Godspeed Mike.
Two fearless hot shoes. I hope they are comparing notes at that drag strip in the sky. R.I.P. gentlemen, we will never forget.... Photos from internet, credit to photographers
This is very sad. Big Mike was one hell of a driver and did total justice to the Winged Express . Willie would be proud I'm sure. I remember Mike saying in a interview , The car will behave and go right down through the run straight two or three times and then will give you a wild crazy pass, It's fun! R.I.P Mike, condolences to all his family and friends in this difficult time.
At the CHHR in 2002, they had an event following the Cacklefest, call the "Ring Of Fire". It consisted of around 30 Vintage Drag Cars of all descriptions parked in a fan layout in the staging area. At the moment they turned out the lights in that area, was the signal to start all of the engines at once, and run them until they got warmed up. We had the Ron Bizio Truck parked alongside the "Winged Express". I was quickest with the squirt bottle, and we had the truck running first, and Mike had the Express running the longest ! While the lights were out, someone swiped the steering wheel from them, as Mike had it off, during the time it was running. Once it was discovered missing, Mike didn't throw a fit, as I would of. The news was sent to the announcer, it took a while, but it was returned. As many have stated, Willy would have been proud of how Mike handled that evil machine !
RIP Mike Boyd, you were taken from us far too young. You were ALWAYS the highlight of my Bakersfield trips .... you NEVER failed to entertain. Some fantastic memories here.
Sad News for Sure. Condolences to Mike's Family, Friends and Fans. The above posted, lane switching burnout is the one that really sticks in my mind, Thanks for That Memory!
