i have some but my scanner is broken. my uncle was a part time security guard back in the early 70's there and he would take me there and i would set in the stands all day. i bet i was at that track 500 times, or more, from the 70's to when it closed, either watching or racing. ton of memories. leonard
Ultimate low buck rat box junior stocker. 59 Chevy Biscayne 283/185 4 speed K/S, total build cost $600. Ran Miami Dragway 66-68. Woods/Hinkle/Soucy
If anyone has a picture of the Bob Dwyer/Weeks/Densmore/Hardy {at different times} built 54 Studebaker junior stocker called the Crockagator that ran & owned junior stock for a long time in the 60s at Miami, please post it. Theres one on the Junior Stock thread but after 34 pages of looking I give up. Bob Dywer owned Precison Auto Machine in Ft Lauderdale & was miles ahead of his time and the NHRA rulebook. A great man and engine builder who passed away years back of diabetes complications. Theres plenty more racers that ran Miami like Marty Snowball, Bob Zlatkin, O'Connell, Hill & Bushart in F/Gas and a lot of others I cant recall right now.
moved down here in the early 90's so i never got to see miami speedway ,i did run on the old hollywood moroso before they shut down and as far as the cars in your pic i know for sure the thunder shifter and bob are still around
yea, the thunder shifter car, along with the owner bob, still show up at the tower shoppes car show every friday night in davie. he was there last night. leonard
Yup, Still in the same shop on NW 6th Ave if I remember the street numbers right. I left Lauderdale in '76 but I try to swing by and see Bob when I get down that way. Lee
yep, they banned them for being too fast here in the states... so fast. and remember the green mamba jet car ? leonard
Yeah, they were great unless you had to run a class car right after they made the lanes all oily. Jets are for spectators, not racers. They had to be really close together to run 4 cars at once there. Maybe they widened it after I left in 1980. Tired of living in a third world country & moved to Montana, quit racing too, now when I get the urge I put a drag tape on and run $20 bills thru a paper shredder, repeat as needed ! Great memories. Bill Dyer was another racer from there too. He still races out of Port Byron Ill. with an M/S & L/S 85 Mustang stocker
As part of the Carroll and Taylor C/G Willys we raced there the day the track opened and were in attendance at "The Last Drag Race" when it closed. I have a couple of pictures of the car but not smart enough to know how post them. We also raced the day Palm Beach International Raceway opened. We had some great times at both tracks. In fact in 1966 we had several winners at the US Nationals in Indianapolis that raced there weekly.
Super historic pix, love the Corvair roadster. $600.00 59 chevy racer, those were the days! Cool!! ~Sololobo/`
57 3100,yeah green mamba was driven by doug rose if memory serves me right ,last thing i heard it was stolen and partially recovered in the tampa area
the other thing is there wasnt anywhere here that sammy miller could get the hydrogen peroxide to run that bad boy
I worked with Taylors brother at FP&L, he gave me some tips when I was building an H/G Anglai with a 310 Ford 6 in it. A lot of names are staring to come back to me Hassell & Cox Anglia for one, Tim James another
i got a good story for you guys. do you remember in the late 70"s when the vanishing point rocket car was going to attempt to jump some canyon like evil knievel tried to ? well me and some friends would always go to the end of the 1/4 mile track after a concert at the sportautorium and collect aluminum beer cans. thats where they would dump all the garbage from the concerts. anyway, we were down there on sunday morning, and some dudes come riding up and tell us they are gonna test run the vanishing point rocket car and we had to leave. we asked them if we could just get off the track, and watch at the end of the 1/4 mile and stay behind the guard rails. he said o.k. if my memory is right, it was a thunder bird rocket car, and he had short, maybe 24"-36" wings on each door. we look toward the tower and see it coming... well right at the end of the timers the damn car starts to literally go airborne. maybe a foot or two off the ground. the driver pulls the chutes but only the drives side opes, and it pulls the car right into the guard rail and sliding towards us setting on the hood of my buddy's 66 impala. comes to a stop right in front of us. there was a crew member on the opposite side of the track taking pictures, and he is yelling at us to see if the driver is o.k..... but we see smoke coming from the car, and could see the driver getting out of the seat belt, so we didnt go near the car, thinking it could blow up any second. man, those were the days. wish i had pictures of that day. leonard
yeah there was a rumor about him wanted to jump something i just cant remember what-the car was a extended wheel base vega
wow, a vega huh ? i was way off huh ? LOL. those were the days.... i cant recall the 4 wide racing though.. maybe before my time going there.. leonard
