Metalflake paint job question...

Is a traditional flake job like a candy paint job, using transparent colors over a flake basecoat? Or, are the flakes mixed into the color coat?

Flakes are usually put on under the transparent top coat. Or they can be put on without any candy making them the top coat. Depends what you want it to look like really.

 

Or you can get Metalflake paint.
