I am in the planning stages of a 37 Chevy coupe 60s hot rod /gasser type build. I want to use a new Borgeson 525 manual box, with the straight axle, cross steer set up. They offer a 24:1, and a 16:1 ratio, which would work best for mostly street driving, but also on the drag strip on occasion? What is the stock ratio? How well do the originals perform? Thanks
You need to work out the overall ratio. It will depend on the lengths of pitman arm and steering arm. Something like a Corvette has 16:1 steering box ratio, and about 20:1 overall ratio. That being said, I'd probably go for the 16:1 box.
Remember you have adjustment by changing steering wheel diameters.. I have a chrome Grant hub so switching steering wheels is a snap. I also like the look of the old style steering wheels.. Any of the old Grant, Covco, Cragar, etc. will fit this hub.. Theres a guy on e-Bay who sells chromed hubs for like 18-20 bucks..
The 32 roadster I recently bought had a Mullins Vega box with a 22:1 ratio. It was too slow reacting so I installed a 16:1, and all is good now as it reacts like a normal passenger car. The 22:1 is for sale @ $50 with 2,100 miles on it.
