I want to get the Pontiac back on the road, and the only real hold up (other then getting my registration back current) is my electric fuel pump. I was driving it with just the mechanical one and was having trouble with it vapor locking. I know the weather is cooler now and it should run better BUT I'd still rather be safe then sorry. I broke my 6 volt one, (scrapped it off in a steep driveway we shouldn't have been trying to drive out of anyway, but you live you learn, right?), and none of the local parts places has one for less then $100 something bucks, and even then it's special order. JC Whitney has one for $40, but I don't have a credit card to order it and I really wanted to be able to go get the stuff and put it on in the same day instead of waiting for the mail man. So..... what I am asking is there a converter to make a 12 volt pump work on a 6 volt system? If I remember, there was talk about running 12 volt radios in 6 volt cars using a VW part? Some sort of converter? Could this be used to make an el-cheapo pump work on my car until I get the time to convert it over to 12?
Jim Carter has a 75$ Voltage boosters that will give you 12volt on a 6 volt system: EL219 Voltage booster $75.14 Not cheap and mail order only... Also not certain if amperage will ever be sufficient with a voltage booster.
you can get 6 volt pump from www.macsautoparts.com for 47.50$ EFP-9350-6 Each 47.50 Fuel Pump Electric 6 Volt 4-6.5 Lbs Pressure 1 1933-1948
Thanks guys, I guess it's just easier to get the 6 volt fuel pump. The reason I never got a credit card was because I never wanted to spend more then I could afford, and plastic makes that seem too easy. I'd be tempted to buy stuff I can't afford or don't need with one, so I allways declined the offers in the mail, (you know the ones). Of course now that we want to buy a house, that idea of mine has turned around and bit me in the ass. The mortage guy we talked to said people would be weary of loaning to a person with a "lack of credit history." So new plan, get a credit card, (but spend wisely), and finance a car so we can get a credit history to buy a house and get out of rental hell. Makes sense huh? We have to get into debt before we can get into debt. Again, thanks guys.
You're a rarity in today's world of debt I'm proud of you, and ran into the same thing in 1999 when I went to take out a 5,000 dollar loan on a car for the first time.. I had to have my dad cosign for the thing.. well fastforward 4 years to present day, I own a house and my credit score was 792 back in January when I bought the house. I have about 8 different cards of various sorts now (sears card, jc penny, check/debit card, visa, etc...) I never use any of them (well I use my debit card all the time) I think you're responsible enough to have one.. You got the paranoia instilled in you that MOST people don't. I've never spent more than I had on hand unless it was an emergency. Not that this helps you out.. but how about traveling to surrounding communities' car parts stores in search of 6v fuel pumps.. try tractor and farm stores.
Thanks for the kind words. I know it's going to be hard to buy a car with no credit either, so we're planning on saving up a big down payment to help convince them we are okay. I really want to do it on my own with out getting a co-signer. I really don't have any one to co-sign for me anyway, so come the first of the year, we'll see what happens. I've never thought about tractor supply places, I'll have to do some calling around I guess. I know I can drive it with out the electrical pump, I just don't want to vapor lock and break down on the road again. My ego took a little brusing with that one, hahaha!
