I've lowered my '52 chevy by removing leaves when the blocks didn't bring it down enough... I took out three of the 7 and then 4 of the 7...three snapped leaves and having to limp it home from work over the course of two years didn't make me happy with that choice.

The last thing I had done two years ago was having the whole spring pack cold de-arched flat. now it sits lower than with the blocks and the removed leaves and I worry less about driving it 25 miles to work in the morning on un-custom friendly freeways...

If you were my son I would have you find a spring shop (most semi or off-road spring suppliers/ manufacturers can do it) roll the springs flat, re-install and forget the blocks. Besides, ever lost a tire with the blocks in there and the bolts hanging down below the rim...Not fun especially @65 in the second lane....

when I do blocks I make it so nothing is below the spring. you can't use a flat spring plate if you want to lower it all the way down and still be safe. I kick mine up so the u bolts are shorter and the nuts are up above the bottom of the spring. the lowest part is the bolt that holds the spring pack together.

I wouldn't remove springs either... get them de-arced or reverse the eyes

By all means, de-arch the springs ... Loudpedal's tech on building your own jig for the job is in the archieves here

I have 3" blocks too. one time the nut on the u-bolts fell off of mine on the 10 FW right near the staples center and all these sparks were flying out the back! It was crazy I had to pull of the freeway and fix it in some skanky alley.

watch out if you do have the main leaf reversed... I can't remember on the 53's how the front hanger is mounted/ where the rivets are but my first go-round I had my main "reversed" (just flipped) and it came in contact with the rearmost rivet on the front hanger... suffice it to say... lessen learned the hard way...ever driven home with a broken main leaf?????

    here's low with just de-arching...
