I'm trying to piece together a cheap 283. I was digging around in my shed yesterday and found a set of L2163 pistons that are .030. In searching for information, I can't determine whether they are forged or not. They do not have an F on the end of the part number. Is that a modern addition? Was this piston available both cast and forged under this number? Thanks, Devin
They are Forged..... with or without the F suffix. The cast pistons started with the 3000 series numbers.
The "L" indicates forged believe it or not (Thompson, TRW, Speed Pro, Federal Mogul use the same numbers/letters). The F is more "modern" addition, but is at the end of the number; L3163F-.030. "H" is for Hypereutectic. Most cast pistons will have a notch in the head of the piston that faces the front of the engine when assembled; forged and Hyper don't have that notch. Now, there are pistons being sold on E-Bay as NOS, and being sold as forged, but they are cast, even though the box has a forged part number. Re-using a box I'm guessing. There are 2 or 3 full, 283 engine sets currently for sale, and someone who does't know is going to get stung. Just put your old junk pistons in a "forged" box and they're forged. Just what you need for your "Corvette" engine. In fact, I believe there is a set of used 12.5:1 283 pistons for sale also, L2248A-STD. I am Butch/56sedandelivery
Scum bastards they are. No doubt just for taking the ad photo I'd bet. Probably keeps the box and the buyer never sees it.
Damn, I'd really like a set of 12.5:1 pistons for this motor too. I'd go look them up if i didn't already know they're cast. Devin
??? They're forged. Yours and the ad about the 12.5:1. They are an old set of TRW's, and they are heavy. One looks like detonation got to it, but I think it was probably in a rusted cylinder, and they/ve just cleaned them up. I am Butch/56sedandelivery.
