i just picked up this 327 short block for 300 bucks,i have been loooking for a running 283 or 327 for awhile but havent had too much luck and this came along so i jumped on it,the guy said it was rebuilt by ed hales shop in san diego, put into a 64 impala but pulled to repalce with a hopped up motor,,he sold the heads of it recently and used the pan/carb/manifold on another engine and sold me the short block, its standard still, not to sure of mileage but was told it was in the impala for 2 years,im no "engine guy",,i know the basics but in not fully educated on motors enough to know if scored or not, what heads would you use on it being that its stock? camel humps or power packs or?,carb/manifold?,thoughts? opininons? advise?,,all welcome,,,thanks:)

I had double hump heads on my stock bottom end 64 nova 327 then I put edelbrock performer RPM intake and cam and holly 750 vac. secondarys and a duel point dizzy. It pulled hard through 7800 rpm hope this helps.

cool ill note that,,thanks,,,im not sure of what cam it has rite now..i plan on using this im my 50 chevy wagon so i dont need a "screaming" motor just something for every day use and enough power to push the wagon around.

  6. I don't think I have ever run across a SBC out of the car and for sale that the seller didn't think might be a Corvette motor.

Should be the serial number and a block code on the front that will tell a little more than the casting number -

  12. Oh, not at all, it's just that there seems to be a good deal more corvette motors out there than Chevrolet made corvettes, at least for me without running the numbers saying "it might be a Corvette motor" and a buck fifty will get me a cup of coffee -

AFAIK Chevrolet stamped a serial number and code on the right (passenger) front of the block, not far below the deck.

Dont want to drag you through the mud, but no 327 was available in '64 in a Chevy Nova. '65 was the first year.

  15. Unless you are going to balance the motor and run performance rod bolts and forged or at least hypertech pistons, never go out with out a pushbroom if you intend on hitting that 7500 rpm regularly. 327 will spin, but in stock form 6000 is pretty much done. Get yourself a good dual-plane manifold and run a 600 to 650 carb. 750 cfm works only with high rpm's and only for those rpms. (Good explanation on how to determine CFM here: http://www.corvetteactioncenter.com/forums/c3-technical-performance/97759-carburetor-formula.html) On a street motor, a good Edelbrock or Carter will work. Camel hump heads or better yet, numbered 462, 461 or 291 heads (last three numbers of the casting) I have had good luck with a Comp 260H cam with Rhoads lifters. (Great performance and gas mileage.) And 327 love to have manual trans behind them.
Added: Also, they look like stock double-valve relief pistons, you should be running 9.5 to 1 compression with the 64 c chambered heads I mentioned.

Everyone that has a 327 motor loves to tell you "Its a Corvette motor". Unless the flat ID pad below the front of the passenger side cylinder head has a Corvette ID code, then it is just a regular 327. Hell, Corvette 327-300 horse engines were no different from Impala 300 horse engines. FYI, ALL small journal 327 engines came with a forged crank.

  17. And from the look of your harmonic balancer, it is a late 327. I believe up until 64, they were the smaller, slimmer ones.

Not true, only low horse (250, 300 hp) engines had the small balancer. 325, 360, 365, and 375 horse engines all had the large 8" balancer.

    HAHAHA..I know and if it's 327 it's got to be a 365 horse motor...

all kidding aside , it looks as if you done good. It's more than likely NOT a Corvette motor but it is clean and STD to boot!

  23. the balancer could have been changed , so you really can't go by that. if it was a corvette motor i have no idea,i don't know if it makes a difference , and i don't care

what i do know it has new flat top standard bore pistons , a forged crankshaft and by what i have read here it's put together by a top notch guy...so i say you did good

Ain't that the truth. Corvettes must have had the worst motors ever for every SBC I've come across has been a 'Vette motor.

The only real Corvette engine I ever picked up cheap came from a "mechanic" that pulled a 350hp/327 out of a 60's Corvette and installed a cheap rebuilt shortblock in it. I asked him what he was gonna do with the old shortblock and he said he was gonna turn it in as a core. I saved him the trouble of taking it back to the rebuilder and gave him core price for it. He also had the factory Holley off of it and I gave him 20.00 for it too. I guess that's been 20 years ago though. Stuff was cheaper then.

My book says it is a 1962-1967 2 bolt 327. Nice engine, and stock bore to boot! Thats the cleanest looking "running" engine I have ever seen.

Ed Hale does good work. I used to live in SD and was Familiar with his shop.
Local legend in the SD area. If its an E/H motor, ya done good. Enjoy it and if you want it to be a vette motor thats ok with me. I have one too, only its a 350 outta a 71 caprice.
