Its not enough to just use jack stands

I know this subject was on the front page here a week or two ago. But after getting real lucky today I felt the need to ad something that some of us probably forget to do.

I went over to my friends fiberglass shop today to do some side work. He has a very nice new 63 corvette pro mod car in that we are going to prep and paint. Anyways I jack up the car and pull the rear slicks so I can remove some tin in the back so I can remove the chutes and wing side panels. So I’m under there holding nuts while he is taking out screws and the car instantly drops. If it wasn’t for huge drag slicks and giant wheel tubs I would have been hurt real bad.

After having a friend killed and his wife having to find him a few years ago I have been more careful. I guess someone thought I needed a reminder because I was getting careless.

Use your jack stands and BLOCK the wheels each way, no mater how flat you think the shop floor is.

And yes after coasting up to the gas pump out of gas then the car falling and not hurting me, I did go get 20 lottery tickets. Its up to 13 million.

All I can say is that if any of the lottery tickets pay off you should share equally with all of your HAMB brothers and sisters.(me first [IMG]). Now on a more serious note. I thought you were going to say the ratchet on the jack stand wasn't engaged and stand collapsed. I've been using jack stands religously for over 40 years w.o. incident and I've had the pawls fail to engage properly twice in the last 2/3 months. Neither time did it result in injury as they collapsed when the weight was put on them. I've been extra cautious lately, they only have to give way once to create a really sad story. Anyway, everyone PLEASE be aware of your safety. You can get very little done on your project from a hospital bed. (Trust me on this)

My new favorite tip is to make a box out of foot-long 2x4s, stacked like Lincoln Logs and nailed together. Makes a riser however tall you want to build it, and is light enough to just throw under the car without any effort, and is very strong.
Spare tire under the car is still a close Second.

Glad to hear you're okay. And glad to bump this back to the top--can't read or hear about these stories often enough.

What does a guys ass have to do with this post? Anywho my favorite jackstands are the ones with the pin that goes all the way through the lift mechanism, I just don't trust those chickenshit ratchet kind. Tractor Supply sells a nifty set and they are cheap.

Nevertheless I always find it hard to work with everything I throw under there. Tree stumps, 4x4's, wheel rims, spare tires, engine block, its like a maze to get into position under the universal joint your changing and then just as much of an adventure "scooting" out cause you can't afford a creeper! And FWIW, don't use cinder blocks either. If you absolutly have to, set them with the holes going up and down. If you lay them sideways, they can collapse under the weight of the car.

I "chucked" ALL my ratchet type jack stands.
Had two fail (slip) when the weight of the car was lowered on them.

Now I use the type that have a "pin" that locks the vertical tube.

Being a bit paranoid I now use grade 8 bolts in place of the pins with Nylock nuts to keep them in place.

Oh.. another thing; ROCK the car BEFORE you slide underneath!

The space was about 10" A trip to the ER,showed no major injuries.Just a good squishing, left me bruised for weeks.Im sorry for not posting the story with the picture, and I'm sorry if I offended anyone with with such a graphic display of my ass. [/ QUOTE ] ABSOLUTLY!! I get up on the bumper and jump and rock and try to make the car go down before ever getting under it. Especially if you're working alone with no one within earshot to hear you screaming! -stick

Well 296, I guess you could say he showed his ass and then you showed yours [IMG]. Just jabbin ya man. I've been known to jump in with both feet my self. It's the HAMB....everybody will forget about it soon enough.

Damn Sparky! You been workin' out??!! [IMG] Just kidding.

That looks mighty painful. How long did it take to heal?

  25. I'll add that there is no percentage in working on a grade. A friend's son was killed about 10 years ago when the car he was under slid off the stands. The driveway where he was working had a slight grade. It also didn't help that it had rained recently and some mud had washed onto the driveway.

Also don't work when tired. I was replacing a driveshaft a couple of years ago when a friend walked up and pointed out theat I had not gotten the car supported correctly. I crawled out and damned if he wasn't correct. I had a jack and a stand but should have had two stands. Tired and in a hurry. Not a very comforting answer.

Ah, but he is a safety conscious person. Look at the way he blocked the right rear wheel. [IMG]
