Projects It happens every time

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by HOTRODPRIMER, Sep 5, 2018.

  1. At least it seems to happen to me, You sell a car and move on to your next project and every thing is coming together and for some unknown reason when you are not working on the current project you hear or see another project that also peaks your interest.

I am happily making progress on the '50 and just causally looked at Craigs list and I see a 63 Falcon very much like the one I had as a teenager and the wheels start to turn, how can I swing this and will my bride approve, heck I already know what she would say and in reality I don't need another project, but had I saw this amonth ago the '50 Ford coupe would still be on my bucket list. Did you sell that cool 5-window?

  5. Yep, thats how I ended up with a 48 Ford coupe. I was cruising Craigslist to see what the local cars were selling for because I was going to sell one of mine. Instead of getting rid of one, I ended up with another. I think there is an algorithm that makes this work out that way.

  7. Yep.....really wanted a 65 Comet...couldn’t find one anywhere...I buy a 65 Falcon...3 days later there’s a killer Comet with a nice SBF, 3 pedals...and less money than I spent on the Falcon!

Danny, there has been a saying about car buying and I think it fits this discussion.
"If you look, you will buy"
    I just don't look!

I usually deal with this scenario really well as long as the formula includes disapproval from my wife. When my wife approves... then I get really wary;)

Whats another car give or take? In this life a little thing like another car that makes you happy is a small thing in the grand plan. You have worked hard all your life and you deserve some of the benefits of the fruits of your labors.

That's some of the shit I spread to my wife when I buy something I don't really need or can't really afford, some times it works, some times she is pissed at me for a couple days. Life goes on;) Sometimes after 48 years with her it is nice to have a day or two of not talking.

Dig into your bag of tricks Danny, we are on your side:D

  13. Yes sir, it went to a very enthusiastic young man that lives in Cherokee, North Carolina and is a traditional hot rodder so it's in good hands. HRP

  16. To me it's all about focus and the more cars I have the less I can focus on one therefore not getting much accomplished on either. So finally came to grips a couple of years ago I will have one hot rod, one big family cruiser and they both have to be drivable. Don't get me wrong there are plenty of cars and projects I would love to have.

It never fails. Once your commited to go in one direction you immediately find something that peaks your interest.

    HRP,
C'mon, man - you KNOW it's easier to ask for forgiveness, than it is for permission. Life is short !

  19. Just like women...it never failed when I was a teenager that I'd start dating a chick then immediately hear through the grapevine that a hotter chick was interested.

  20. I learn a valuable lesson a long time ago when it comes to cars, I use to justify having multiple projects by saying while I'm waiting for parts I can be working on another car but in reality I had too much money invested in cars that wouldn't run and probably never would at the rate I was going.

I have my Deuce sedan that has been my favorite hot rod for a long time and we have the Ranch Wagon that is a finished car but I have always enjoyed having a project, in the past 15 odd years the projects have generally been deuces but the time has come that I wanted to fulfill a dream I had since I was a kid and that was to have a '50 Ford coupe and since I have retired the expense of building '32 Fords just ain't in the budget. Danny, is Cherokee still the quaint little place it used to be, say 20 yrs. ago? Glad to see an old car went to a young man, maybe there's some life left in the hobby!

  22. Cherokee has grown since Harrah's Hotel & Casino opened, a lot of the old shops are still there.

The Cherokee Rodders have a rod run in October and it's a nice time of year, we drove our topless roadster several years ago and woke up to snow flurries. :D HRP

Happens to all of us, I already have a garage full and two cars in the driveway and was looking at another car and my wife's answer was where are you going to put it. I told her if I put a few more parts on the project car I could clear out a stall. Problem is something is always getting pushed back when something new comes home, A friend says we have OCD (old car disease) and he's right but there's no cure.

  27. I'm pitiful! I've got projects that I've owned for years, and all I done on them is gather parts.
I won't live long enough to finish them, and retirement won't let me hire it done. They're all bucket list cars, and selling them is something I don't like to think about. It started with the roadster, then a 33 coupe, then the 40 coupe came along. That's 3. Then a 31 pickup, but to my credit I traded it for a must-have 40 pickup. That's 4. Then that 77 Bronco, but I'm trading a 36 sedan for work on it. 5 & 6. And then there's that 32 sedan that's consumed the last three years of my life. Oops, almost forgot, the basket case early OHV banger sprint car. NO MORE! JUST SAY NO!

Wow,sure glad I am not alone. No cure you say? I had better go buy that 64 Merc my buddie keeps tempting me with. Maybe it will help relieve the stress of knowing that I have terminal O C D . I wonder how the wife will feel about adding on to the shop again? lol Larry

I'm good! I haven't bought a car or truck in 2 years (we didn't reach an agreed price so I didn't buy it).
I went for several years with just my wife's car, my pickup, and the coupe. Then I bought a project truck, then I bought a parts truck for the project. I am nearing completion of the project, but now I'm considering building the parts truck....
The worst part is the project was suppose to replace my worn out pickup, but somewhere along the line, the direction changed and it won't work to replace my pickup. Now I have to buy a pickup, for a shop truck, but I'm retiring at the end of this month, I won't need a shop truck, but I still will need a pickup...I'm afraid the parts truck won't be done before my pickup gives up.

Maybe I do have the Old Car Disease. Gene
