It looks like a 62 was a 235, 63 would have been a 230. What is the number stamped on the pad behind the distributor??

The L22 engine series debuted in 1962 in the Nova only, then everything else in 1963.

The L22 engines have the distributor towards the front of the engine, rather than the middle like a 235 would be.
Next to the distributor is a machined pad with a stamped code on it. Look that up instead of the casting number.

The only difference between a 230 and 250 is the crankshaft and pistons. The top of the 230 pistons are flat, the 250 is slightly dished.

Am I correct in saying there is no way of telling if a motor is a 230 or 250 just by looking at it...even pulled out sitting on a engine stand?

Yeah, no real way to tell. Many times the 230 and 250 blocks were cast from the same patterns and molds and often have the same casting #'s on the block. Pull the pan or head to check stroke, thats the only true method of elimination.

Externally, like I said, look up the stamped number next to the distributor.
