How about a thread wherein we show our love and appreciation for that color known as Washington Blue? I used to think any blue paint used for a car had to be metallic, that was before I recently acquired a 47 Ford coupe painted that beautiful blue color.

I actually started this thread to ask about the various shades of blue I see that are all called "Washington Blue", and as I was researching for the thread it occurred to me that 1. true Washington Blue will appear different shades, depending on the lighting, and 2, slight differences in formulation result in slightly different shades, and this sometimes happens because people intentionally want a slightly different hue, some want it slightly lighter, some want it slightly darker. And that's OK with me, Viva La Difference! That's part of what makes this color so attractive. In the shade it can almost appear black. But in the light the blue color comes out, and when the light hits it at certain angles it really lightens up.

Please, share pics you have of cars (yours or not) painted in what Washington Blue, or even a close variance of that dark deep blue.

First off, here's my 47 coupe, which I will admit is a slightly lighter shade of blue, very close, but on the lighter side of the spectrum:

Good illustration of how the shade changes based on the lighting.

Back when I had two nickles to rub together my plan was to paint my roadster in the darkest blue I could find, which is much darker than Washington blue.
I think the car that sparked this was Bob Bauders car, it was so dark it looked black.
Nearly 20 years ago, I seem to recall that Dupont offered a color called "no moon blue".
Quite a coincidence but just yesterday saw a new or near new dark blue Cadillac that really looked good, the problem is most new blues have a lot of mettalic in them.

  6. Giving this bump because I love Washington Blue also, and would love to see more examples. I Came really close to painting my pickup that color before going with black.

I was going to go with Washington blue but decided to go a bit different. I ended up choosing 1938 Indian Motorcycle Navajo blue IMG_2270.JPG

I like how the color changes. Blue isn't my favorite color, but it looks good on the examples shown.

This was the first time I ever painted anything serious, I used gray Pro Form epoxy primer followed by gray Evercoat Ultra High build polyester primer surfacer.

Then I shot 4 coats of color.

Before that of course I spent hundreds of hours on body work and prep ( block sanding etc.), quite literally daily almost all summer.

The paint is BASF RM Uno single stage acrylic urethane.
