How old is that kid and where did he learn what he just did. You need to be an experienced machinist to pull that off.

  3. This kid is sharp. Don't know his background, but he really thinks things through, and pulls off some amazing stuff without a mega-bucks shop. This should be a killer car when he's finished!

  4. I’ve been contemplating how to cut splines in my drive shaft was going to come in from the top with a 1/4” end mill but that leaves a sharp corner at the end of the spline. Coming in from the side with a big end mill leaves a radius just like the factory.
    BRILLIANT

I believe if you look at a ford spline, you will see it is shaped like a W between the splines. I think, ford did it with a horizontal mill, and cut the 10 oclock and 2 oclock splines at once, which is a level surface, and which leaves the slight rise in the center to give the W shape. I tried to have a gear maker here in mpls do it years ago, thinking they have the cutter to do one spline at a time, both sides, and they told me no such thing, you need to do it on a mill by hand, which my friend did for me. I cut off a 1/4" slice so we had a piece to copy, mounted that on a jig, and cut the splines rotating by hand using the slice for a guide. he go one too loose, but five out of six was ok with me !

He's in college, so probably early 20s. I believe he's working in his dad's home shop so I imagine he grew up watching his dad work on stuff.
