Heat and a scraper. Heat gun or torch. Just warm it up, you don't have to set it on fire. It's not as labor intensive as it sounds.
torch and a scraper, just like he said. I had old guys tell me kerosene works (supposedly softens it up), but never tried it.
If it's rubber based, then you can lay some dry ice on it. The coating will become brittle and usually crack up. Hit it with a mallet a few times and then come back with adhesive remover to get rid of the residue.
Heat and a scraper, then i usually follow that up with heat and steel wool. Watch out steel wool will catch fire.
Ditto on heat and scraper... like a putty knife, etc. Then follow it with lacquer thinner to get the last of it. For the heat, if you're using a torch (those hardware store propane torches are ideal for this.), just lightly hit the undercoating with the flame till it turns black. Work an area about 8 or 9 square inches at a time. Torch in one hand, knife in other.
