I have a paint gun that I have had for around 3 years, that i'l admit to being awful about properly cleaning. Its a 1.8mm tip gun that I have used for spraing primers and epoxy, and I havnt always cleaned it as well as I should have each time after use, and now its just really messed up. Its a sharpe finex, so its nothing terribly expensive. I am ordering a rebuilt kit, as Im sure whatever I use to remove all of the paint buildup will ruin any seals inside.

It still does pass paint, and air, however the fan is very limited in width, and it takes a lot more than the 30 psi reccomended to get any paint flow, and even at around 80psi, paint flow is bad.

My question is, what can I use to soak it in that will desolve all of the epoxy sealer and 2k primer that has built up in all of the passages? Urethane thinner hasnt worked, and neighter has laquer thinner.

i use paint stripper and just let all the metal parts soak for a week
then i take a safety pin to anything else left on it scrape it off. It took me 3 tries to get my gun cleaned but it works now and it was free :)

What about using a torch tip-file to help clean up/out the flow holes?

The pattern is messed-up on mine. It's like the top half of the fan pattern is cut off. Is that a clogged problem or an adustment problem?

Take it apart if you can, soke all the parts in lacquer thinner over night or a couple of days, brush all the parts and blow them off with compressed air, especially the nozzles etc. Run straight lacquer thinner, thru the gun, repeat if you have to.
I do this every couple of month.
Replace the hose between the cup and the gun and the cup gasket.
It should be as good as new.

I buy spray carb cleaner at the Dollar Store and I use it to clean my guns. After cleaning with the carb cleaner I usually flush the gun with laquer thinner. If yours is as bad as you say, it might not help but you could try.

Soak it for a week in MEK - available at Home Depot.
Seal the container well and wear gloves when handling. It even cleans gel coat guns.

I never thaught of MEK. Thats nasty stuff, basicly the main component in plastic cement. It should eat through anything on a paint gun, Im going to try that.

    Hey,

Think of a spray gun as you would a carburator-
They do much the same thing, atomize fluids. If they have air leaks
or plugged passage ways, they won't work well, if at all. Anytime you
remove a packing or gasket from a gun plan on a rebuild. Ya would,t
pull gaskets from a carburator, try to reuse them, and expect it to
    work out, would ya?
Acetone, parts dip (the real shit), paint stripper will all work, it's a
matter of what kind of finish has dried in the gun. Lacquer thinner is
pretty much diluted acetone so don't waste you time with it. Do not
use any metal tools i.e. wire, picks or torch cleaners to clean the
passage ways of a gun. To do so is the quickist way to turn that gun
    into a primer gun.

Im just gonna put your number on my speed dial, you always have a good answer to my questions.

Im gonna start soaking it tonight.

  19. I've found that the only thing MEK won't cut is epoxy.

I'm a painting contractor and we spray all kinds of different stuff. We use MEK or Xylene to clean our stuff. Xylene is the only thing I've found that will clean Red-Ox primer.

I used kleenstrip on my old NAPA spray gun. It worked really slick, but I removed all of the rubber parts first.
