I've recently started seeing more posts regarding stovebolts and inlines. How many of you are running these engines and what are you runnning them in?

My vehicles are newer than what most of the threads cover on here, but I have the following, all running stovebolts:

    63 Nova (194)
    65 Nova (250 w/ integrated head - blah)
    70 c-10 (292)

54 235 in a 53 business coupe. BTW stovebolts are 37-62 216/235/261/301 and are different from the 63-up 194/250/292 family

I've got a stock 235 in my '51 Styleline. Currently headless as a result of our love/hate relationship.

Also got a 250 in my '64 C10. Stock but for a carb and distributor upgrade. Like 53sled said, it's technically not a stovebolt, but I love that engine.

How about a couple of movies, since it's Wednesday and all.

Definitely not a stovebolt, but have a 4.6L AMC/Jeep EFI in-line six in my Rambler (what else?). That's a 4.0L with a 258 crank and rods. The 4.0L is only slightly changed from the original block introduced in mid 1964. You can even bolt a 4.0L head to a 64 block with minor changes (bolt pattern is the same). Of course the mains and crank are pretty much the same. The 4.0L block has a shorter stroke and bigger bore than the 258. Swapping cranks alone adds 0.44" to the stroke, bringing it up to 4.5L. Bored 0.030" to clean up the block, but also raises to 4.6L (280 inches). 3.895" bore and stroke when bored 0.030" over.

Thanks for the input 53sled - good to know.

Over at stovebolt.com they [FONT=Verdana, Arial]'define a "Stovebolt" as any pre-'73 GM truck (covers anything made by Chevy, GMC, Republic, Little, Oldsmobile or Samson).' Also at http://www.stoveboltengineco.com/acartpro/, half of the items for sale are for the 194/230/250/292 family. Is the term stovebolt is just being used for any of the old inline chevy engines?

its like calling a 348/366/409 a big block chevy. Its more to give people a label to identify with. People love labels. But the stovebolt term came from the old chevy engines.

  16. Running is a subjective word... '64 223 Ford, 2x1, split headers in a A frame.

  17. 53 sled is right. As far as the people over at Stovebolt.com, they are to be forgiven for being full of shit on their definition, because they are kids. OF COURSE, KIDS THAT DON'T KNOW WHAT A STOVE BOLT IS TO START WITH DON'T HAVE A CLUE ON HOW TO IDENTIFY A STOVE-BOLT MOTOR, so they make it up as they go along, instead of finding out the facts before they jump in. The history is always being re-written, so what else is new?
How do you tell a stove-bolt Chevy/gm motor? It's pretty simple, really. First off, it has to have the stove-bolts. What is a stove-bolt? It's a little BOLT with a round head with a common-head screw slot and a square (not hex) nut. The stove bolts were used to secure the oil plumbing that poured oil into the troughs in the crankcase from which the dippers on the con-rods picked up the oil for lubrication of the rod bearings. The screw-slot heads are visible (3 of them) on the side of the crankcase, a couple of inches above the oil pan flange.

    I'm running an inline 6, a 250, (not) a stovebolt motor.

b29chevy and 53sled thanks for clearing that up for me.... didn't understand why my engines were called stovebolts and didn't have anything on them like the above picture. Now I know that they're NOT stovebolts.

Oh yeah, love them inlines. Gotta get a camera, but...
Been running a rebuilt '54 235 in my 52' for the last few years. Lot's of miles, long trips, mountain roads. Still going strong.
And even though they ain't old, I run sixes in my daily drivers:
4.0 in my Jeep. (Abused, neglected, stolen, stolen again, AND still haulin')
Rebuilt six in my Supra (Quick as all-hell, torquey and FUN)
Now if I can just get around to building up that Dodge...to run on biodiesel and veggie oil...
    I'll be runnin' inline forever.

"Have faith, this 6 can take that 8"

I never trusted those BENT-8 motors, I think they're a fad. My current selection of inline's including a "real" stovebolt 216:

    '50 Chevy Deluxe - Inline Stovebolt 6

    '63 Falcon Wagon - Inline 170/6 2.77 "Pursuit 170"

'61 Comet -Inline 200/2.77 "Last of the Big Fins"

    235 in my 53 belair...
Dat Dirty Rat turned me onto inline's a while ago as he's had a few.and still has on in his 54.
I'm a horsepower nut, BUT the sound these thing's make is unmistakable and in my own oppinion running anything else in my car would just ruin it...

  30. Actually, the screws pictured aren't stove-bolts, the heads are too flat, a stove bolt has a round head. But, you're learning. I didn't know this was going to be a technical, but I promise, I'll go dig out a real vintage stove bolt from a 1930's 194 or 216 and show it here tomorrow. Oh the suspense is killing me! ;)
