How do you ID a 1935 ford flat head V8 motor?

Hi have a 1935 Ford Woody Wagon with a 1940 Merc engine. I am thinking of going back with period correct engine Any ideas or help would be greatly appreciated

 

It would have 21 studs, babbit bearings, and waterpumps in the heads.

 

They say '35 Ford Flat head on the Over head valve covers! DUH.....

 

In what period are you wanting to be correct? A '35 Ford with a '40 Merc engine would be correct for anytime from 1941 up. By the time they were 5 or 6 years old, the majority of old Fords had had their engines replaced.

 

Unless you're looking for a correct restoration, with NO non-original parts, the 40 engine is very acceptable in the car and much more user friendly than the early versions with the water pump heads. I doubt that the value of the vehicle would drop at all with the later engine because it's so near the original mfg. date and it's so much better for someone that wants to use the car.

 

Original block is pretty easy to nail; look for a 21 stud block without big holes for '37-48 water pumps and with the extra opening by right front of pan for a little ventilator--you can see this part on your '40 motor. There are actually two versions...one, used in a few '35's and many '36 had replaceable main bearings, the generally used '35, partial production '36 had poured babbitt mains. In the car, they'd be indistinguishable. I'll be right down to pick up the '40 Merc, don't bother dragging it out to the dumpster...

 

Thanks everybody. I'm new at this and own bought the woddy with the 40 merc in it. The past owner dais he wanted more horse power so he removed the original moter. Now I am thinking of either selling it or going for a more modern engine ( 350 /350 ) If I sell it I thought it would be worth more if it had the right year motor. Thanks again Ron

 

If you get rid of the Merc motor, be aware that it is a sought-after block.

I think someone needs to steal it so it does not get the 350/350.
