History His-Story of "Stan Back" the Roadster

Discussion in 'Traditional Hot Rods' started by J.Fishbeck, Mar 13, 2016.

  1. I think it was '79 Street Rodder magazine. Pat Ganahl wrote down a few highlight notes, because he knew Jim. Then Ganahl was let go, but the notes remained behind. So the story was taken over by someone that knew nothing of the car. So a lot of that was just fudged by SR mag.

what bunch of great info, I am 68yo and that is the first time I ever heard the relationship about the v8 and the I6 I knew a good running chevy or ply 6 would outrun the flathead but not their own 6cyl thanks for the info Tom

  6. I had heard Jim's roadster had history, really cool to get the low down. It is awesome a roadster run close to 70 years ago is still being raced.

  8. Wow, two great stories of Pasadena Roadsters in the last few days, can it get any better than this.
    Very cool.

  9. After loading the car up on Sundays, were pretty wore out. Jim Siegmund, talked Kitchen into driving the car down, so we didn't have to push it. His laugh at the end made it all worth it.

I have more to add, tomorrow.

  10. I thought the early history was cool, then the PRC on top of it all. . Righteous!

That roadster has always been a beaut, looked great in the Southard book and it looks great now - how cool. Must be a blast to get to take that thing racing.

Its stories like this one ( and the other one about early prc cars) that makes visiting the HAMB worthwhile.

This car left an indelible mark in my psyche many years ago, and it's still a great car to refer to
Love that 5 carb Jimmy, and the knowledge that parts from it's street incarnation are still haunting the streets of Los Angeles.

Best way to use your hot rod is to use it, and Jim has certainly done that over the years.

Thanks again for sharing the history of this car with us

What a great way to start a day! I didn't expect to see and hear so much good stuff when I opened this thread. Thanks for taking the time to share this storied history of Stan Back with us.

  20. I enjoy doing this.

I'm applying the last couple coats of primer, now. Getting it ready for paint here, in a little bit. Not the whole body, just the "salty" bits that needed attention, along the bottom.

All I'm sure about with Jim is if you take away any record he has you must be cheating. :)

  23. An you can bet he's gonna protest it, also!

Great story!!! I recognized it as the Leithold roadster, but did not know the history before or after. Might be a record for longest racing car in scta!! Is the Ford 6 still around? Bet it had some trick stuff for 1947! Thanks for sharing!

  29. I think it had the 283 sbc in it, when he bought it.
