Hinge less Hoods on Customs

I can only assume that there are other makes and models of car like my 1950 Buick that are hinge less and flip up on the side and or from the firewall.With that it mind my question is,have any of you folks seen or fabricated some sort of system using hydraulics or other means of raising the hood.I am going back with very expensive paint and am worried about the wait of the hood shifting and chipping the finish
