Brought this transmission in Pomona 10-12 years ago, was told its a '54. Looked through threads trying ID it, with no success. The case casting # is 594747 GM5 and the serial # is GBI 25462. If it's '54 I would renew it and exchange it for the noisy one in my '54 BelAir... In advance, Thanks for help, Dyno Dave
According to my parts book the casting number for 49-54 should be 591747, also it looks like 52-54 will have the mounting holes for the rear mount here (note this is an earlier trans without the mount holes). Only other differences I know of are 53-54 used a different bearing setup between the input and mainshaft but you can put the earlier setup in a 54 trans, did that to my son's a couple of years ago. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=598897
24riverview, thanks for your reply, looking at the transmission mount rubber, I'm thinking its a '49-'51 version of the Muncie model 318. I was hoping for info on a serial number chart to ID the specific year of the transmission, to learn how to ID the various years, again the #s are GBI 25462 and again, thank you...Dyno Dave
