Hey Guys I got a column from a GM pickup, I don't know the year, but it has no key or shiftier only tilte. It needs to be rebuilt, but I can't get the sheet metal off and I don't want to destroy it, would someone please help me. Thanks Mike
If you are 100% sure it was a GM pickup...then it must be from the era of the 67-72 style cab. I do not know the exact year of the first tilt column in those years 66 & older trucks had no tilt option, and 73-up had a key switch. .
The top sheet metal round cover slips straight off. At the base of it there should be a small detent so it can only go back on one way. Use a small screwdriver or razor blade to get it started. It's a tight slip fit.
You can also lightly tap the sheet metal piece off by using a mall punch in the oval hole where the tilt lever goes and tap it towards the top of the column.
Thank You Sir...its off. Also how does the rear section come off, I want to total take this columu apart, Thanks
Made this years ago when putting a 67 Camaro tilt column in my 67 Nova. FYI, those 70-72 Chevy/GMC truck tilt columns have gotten pretty hard to find, I put one in my 66 Suburban in the 90's, they were hard to find then, have gotten quite expensive compared to the 73 and up version.
