    FYI, a '53 should be a 235 not a 216.

Are you dead set on an automatic? If you're going to go to an open rear anyway, it's a hell of a lot cheaper to bolt a more modern 4 or 5 speed stick to your engine, using cheap stock parts.

  7. Langdon's has an adapter but will discontinue item when sold out. use this link to look.
http://tinyurl.com/6wpg2ts I have one on my 261 with 200r4 trans. Works great.

the early 235's have just 2 bolts on the valve cover, look up the engine number located near the distributor. anyway my friend used a 200r4 behind a 250 and ran good, check on a t-5 swap also

235 has a short side cover that stops at the top of the block, while the 216 side cover goes all the way to the valve cover. All of them had two nut valve covers until the mid 50s.

  11. If you are going automatic, stay away from Turbo 350, my pick would be a 200r4 or T-5 out of an S-10.

my buddy makes the crossmembers for the s-10 t-5 swap. He also bought the adapter place from hotrodworks.com and it wasnt cheap, but its a nice piece and it's made in America. Get a rear end that is 60 inches wide from backing plate to backing plate, some perches, and a case of beer and have at it. The swap we did on his '54 went pretty flawlessly.
