Just wondering if there is a prefered head gasket for a 59 A engine.I did a search and came up blank. Thanks
I prefer copper over graphite—-I have 4 flats I regularly shuffle in and out of my 32. I prefer copper because I can and have many times used them(gaskets) again and again. I do NOT paint or coat any sealant on the gaskets and simply pull the bolts(not studs) and the gaskets merely fall off. I clean up any residue and re-use them again. I have done this many times, so don’t tell me this won’t work—- have done this over and over and over with no problems. I only torque to 40-45 ft pounds and have never had any problems as long as heads and block are FLAT!! Flatheads Forever.
I'm no expert...but I can share my experience...cast iron block, aluminum heads and copper head gaskets worked well until taking the engine on a 6 hour trip that included mountain passes and required the flatty to work a bit harder. Head gasket leaked (in spite of regular re-torquing/checking). Conclusion, different materials with different rates of expansion and contraction don't play well together. I now have "Best" brand "graphtite" composite gaskets. So far, so good.
Ford originally used a composite head gasket on there early engines....They seem to work better on the cars that had factory aluminum heads....I figure the factory did enough testing and there engineers knew more about what was needed than I do.....
I M O, if the bore is not more than .060 over Felpro composition gaskets always work for me. Installed DRY & clean.
