Hats Off to the Ladies of Drag Racing

We can all agree that Jungle Pam (Pam Hardy) was and still is a knock dead sexy lady and a gigantic asset (no pun intended) to the sport of drag racing, however with no disrespect to Pam we should also remember the lady drivers of drag racing many of which were also knock-outs on and off the track.

How about Barb Hamilton. She was the first lady licensed to run in the supercharged gas classes. She flat towed her Willys across the country in the early 60's to race at tracks on the west coast including Lions dragway.

NHRA's first major female winner was Shirley Muldowney, who earned a Top Fuel victory in 1976. She has been followed by eight other women who have won major national events in the 57-year history of NHRA. The most recent, Peggy Llewellyn, became the first black woman to win an NHRA race, claiming the Pro Stock Motorcycle victory in Dallas last October. All I remeber about Lori Johns, was the lawsuit she brought against the Van Cleave family for an accident that broke her neck during competition. That had a LOT of people worried over the legal ramifications of at fault responsibility in racing. She later dropped the suit if I remember right.

 

Gang -

Back in the late 60's there was a gal who toured widely with a twin-engined (injected) Chevy dragster. I saw her at Springfield/Ozark Raceway in '66 or '67, I'd guess. One of the first women to tour extensively that I know of. Her "claim to fame" was pretty much that she was a female dragster driver. Quite the novelty in those days.

It would be great to hear more about your grandparents...they were very respected "back in the day" & well liked.

I never got a chance to talk with them personally but saw them around the pits a time or two.

 

I haven't noticed Rhonda Hartman Smith posted. She and her brother Richard ran fuel cars for many years. She married John Smith, son of long time fuel racer Paul Smith, and started making little racers. The whole family was out at South Georgia Motorsports Park for the nostalgia event on Oct 25-26 have a ball racing just for fun.

Let's not forget Kim LaHaie. While she only made a few test passes, her wrench turning abilities are legendary. This is a 1977 shot from the Gatornationals.

 

The Harker twins have landed in the USA from Australia with their dad, Alcohol Funny Car racer Steve. All now live in Gainsville, Georgia. Both Kate and Diana have been running Alcohol dragsters on the NHRA tour this year. Look for big things from these two lovely ladies in the near future.
