have a 29 ford roadster with a banjo rearend and was wondering if it posiable to put12 in. backing plate f1 brakes on it using stock ford drums ? I have them on front using the truck front drums.
I have done it on a '40 rear end. F-100 front backing plates, with spuds welded in for the E brake. Used the E brake hardware from an 11" F 1 series rear & a '40 E brake cable. I used '46-'48 hubs (outside mount) with the O.D. & the center register O.D. turned down to fit an '86 F series truck rear drum. The drum as installed will rub on the backing plate. I took about .060" off the drum to clear. A better solution would be taking some material from the backing plate. EDIT- F1 & F100 are 11" brakes.
I did on my 31. I cut the centers out of some 40 backing plates, and the outters out of some 50 f1 backing plates, and joined the two. I used f1 drums, but I had to machine the centers to fit over the banjo axles. Many hours and effort went into them to make it all work. In hindsight, I wouldn't do it again. I'll just use 39-48 brakes. Too much work for little gain, in my opinion...
thanks for that,i never though of cutting down the stock old ford drum an using it as a hub.thanks for the share.
