My mag (bbc) snapped the spindle and i need to replace it. Has anyone ever taken one of these apart/could i do it? Or do i need to send it to someone and have it rebuilt? It was recently rebuilt so i would rather not have to go through that again. Thanks.
I've never seen one break a shaft. What happened to cause that? The magnets are very fragile. You need to be very gentle when working on them. If you can't remove the lower housing and unbolt the shaft, I would recommend you send it to Don Zig or Taylor.
Thank you very much for the info. I was driving the car, got stuck in traffic and the car got warm, not hot mind you, but around 200 degrees, for around 2 hours. when traffic finally cleared, i got off the highway to get gas, when i got back on the freeway, i got on it hard through first gear and then the engine quit pulling. it sheared clean off where the spindle comes out of the housing.
If the shaft in the drive housing sheared it is an easy fix. Separate the mag body from the drive (should be a couple of socket head screws holding the halves together). Remove the roll pin form the drive gear and the shaft should slide right out of the housing. It has been a long time ago, but i believe that dad and I machined a Chevy shaft to receive the vertex drive (looks like a diamond that press fits on the drive shaft) and it worked fine. As noted above, the internals of the body are fragile. And if the shaft in the body sheared, I would be surprised if there was not more mayhem inside. Dad had a BBC vertex with a matching autometer monster tach he was willing to part with a while back. PM me if you are interested.
